OK, so what do we do about Africa? Actually, where do we even start? Disease, war, poverty, human rights abuse? Most pundits bring it down to poverty, and thus ask for more money for the continent as the solution. But let's get serious here. Who thinks Africa hasn't been making money?

Naw let just nuke it.
Maybe the King of Morocco should run it.
I am sure the Zulu’s won’t mind.
Colonize it again?
"Africa wins."
By that they mean that no matter what you do to change things and make conditions better, the continent and its people find a way to neutralize your efforts. Send money? It buys Benzes for warlords. Send food? It's used as a carrot or stick by same. Send experts? They're roundly ignored. Send industrialists with capital? They work out just fine as long as they stay there to run their factories themselves...and if they stay too long, they get resented and possibly kicked out. Send troops? That's fine if you want a war. Otherwise they're expensive and counterproductive.
Africa wins.
I have spent a lot of time in Africa and watched it slide into chaos as the colonial powers left. Now I would propose a 100 year deal with western nations to take over a despotic African country, invest and (get rewards of those investments for 100 years)., and after 5 generations, hopefully Democratic processes would be established(like India), and the country would be weaned off on its own to join civilization.
Isn’t that more or less how Angola was handled? Also, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and many others. Look how they turned out.
Leave Africa to Africa. If they want to live with spears and shields, let them. They have contributed nothing, in general to the world. Well....mabye ivory.....oh boy, we really need that huh? When we send money, our tax money, over there, it gets stolen. We need our tax money here....and where in our Constitution does it give our government the right to take our money and give it to another country?
Seal the Borders, send in more weapons and let them go at it..
Isnt Africa the reason they invented Razorwire?
As long as we can buy what we want from Africa at market prices, leave it to the Africans.
Africa is poverty, corruption, disease, filth and hopelessness on steroids.
Too bad for them, but there's really nothing we can do to effect change over there.
“They have contributed nothing, in general to the world. Well....mabye ivory...”
Don’t forget the gold and diamonds as well...
Until Africa as a whole moves beyond tribalism, internicene warfare, greed, corruption and superstious paganism (for example believing that by having sex with an infant you won’t contract AIDS), they will continue to exist in the planet’s backwater.
If they can’tI think we ought to “take off and nuke the whole place from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.” /Lt. Ripley.
Aim this at Robert Mugabe and every other vicious thug over there:
Save it? Just ignore it. Stop sending it money, food, arms, etc. They’ll figure out they need to straighten up and fly right. But the problem is, somebody else always will move in and take advantage of that.
So yeah, nuke ‘em. Sounds good.
Now, 21 years later, my predictions have come true.
With the single exceptions of South Africa and Egypt, the whole continent is a sewer of disease, famine, drought and tribulation.
“Until Africa as a whole moves beyond tribalism, internicene warfare, greed, corruption and superstious paganism (for example believing that by having sex with an infant you wont contract AIDS), they will continue to exist in the planets backwater.”
Most Western political decision makers do not understand that the impact of tribalism (and the other things you mentioned) far exceeds that of colonialism or multinbatioal corporations on the day to day life of most Africans.
Actually, the saying is “AWA”....
Africa wins AGAIN!
Good explanation, though!
War, poverty and human rights abuses have been the history of Africa since time immemorial.
Even a long period of colonialism taught Africans nothing. European imperial powers built cities, roads, hospitals, railroads, industry, farms, and brought government to Africa. When colonialism ended Africa went back to war, poverty and human rights abuses.
Why should “we” do anything. Zimbabwe is a good example. Blacks kicked out all of the white farmers. Now the country is starving because blacks are unable to grow the food that white farmers grew. Go figure.
The brutal truth is that the outside world has tried unsuccessfully for hundreds of years to “help” Africa.
Bwana, if I may ask, where are you serving? I know some missionaries in Cote D’Ivoire, but they’re not the kind to stick around and teach life skills...they’re more “arena revival” types.
Nowhere. See my tag line.
