BEDFORD Rudy Giuliani yesterday promised to make the war on terror, a larger military, and illegal immigration among his top priorities if he is elected President.
"We're going to lay out a mission of doing what other people think are impossible," Giuliani said. "I love that. I love doing what people think are impossible. Nothing energizes people more than doing the impossible."
Speaking at the Old Town Hall, Giuliani unveiled a 12-point agenda for his Presidency, contrasting his optimism and focus on the future with what he called the defeatism and despair of Democratic Presidential candidates he said want to bring the country back to the higher taxes and lower military spending that characterized the Clinton Presidency.
"There was possibly no greater mistake than the peace dividend of the 1990s that the Democrats want to return to," Giuliani said. "They cut our military services dramatically and drastically because we thought the world was peaceful while this terrorist threat was growing and while they were declaring war on us, we were reducing the size of our military."
His top priority, the former New York City mayor said, would be fighting the war on terror through expanding the size of the military. He specifically called for the addition of 10 brigades, or about 35,000 soldiers, to the military, adding that more may be needed.
"You face bullies, tyrants, and terrorists with strength, not weakness," Giuliani said.
Foreign and domestic intelligence services need to be strengthened as well, Giuliani said. He also proposed a new corps of civilians and military personnel that would specialize in stabilizing and rebuilding war-torn countries like Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army will probably make its quota this year, but it missed it in May.
The media should ask him where this BIG army is going to come from. I agree that we have an army that is far too small to meet our military goals and provide security.
Rudy talks a big game -- but I notice the idea of the draft is really unpopular around here. I believe Rudy is talking about manditory National Service. How about you?
How do YOU think we can grow a larger army as quickly as possible?
Simple, end the don't as don't tell policy. </ Sarcasm>
Illegals, thats where they will get the men. They join the service and get their citizenship.

By paying for qualified people, not by enslaving people of a certain age.
Your “draft” speculation is unwarranted and despicable.
Increasing salaries.
“We’re going to lay out a mission of doing what other people think are impossible,” Giuliani said. “I love that. I love doing what people think are impossible. Nothing energizes people more than doing the impossible.”
” . . . while this terrorist threat was growing and while they were declaring war on us, we were reducing the size of our military.”
A legacy from the Clinton co-presidency.
I believe Rudy is talking about mandatory National Service.
Rudy has never done anything that was impossible, so I’m not sure why he would say he loves doing that.
Oh yeah, he’s grandstanding again. I forgot, he is America’s mayor, the hero of 9/11, the only person who kept the country from absolute anarachy. By giving a few tough guy speeches....
What a phony.
Oh, pulease. This is a discussion forum. I apologize for triggering your most primal fear.
You actually had a good suggestion -- and could have stated it intelligently:
"Significantly increase the ammount we pay for soldiers to join the military."
If he does then I wonder if law clerks will still get exemptions?
And a Republican Congress.
Upping the payroll would be a good start.
That's true. Growing the military is number one on his "list." I think he should be challenged on his strategy for accomplishing this.
I think Rudy is used to selling a pig in a poke. And I think people are used to buying one from him. That has to change.
Oh, I forgot. He tried to stay in office beyond his term limits, because of .............. 9/11. He failed, fortunately. It was not possible.
Here’s a good review from a 2001 article from Jewish World Review. Another glimpse at the real Rudy:

Well for one, the military can quit being so picky as to who they let in. With me, they had a guy who would have done whatever he was told and was 110% devoted to the military values...and they turned me down because of something that ended five years ago. Who knows how many other eager, devoted Americans have been denied entrance just because they didn’t have a crystal clean past.
Thanks for posting your story.
And thanks for stepping up.
I support the returning of the Draft !!
A legacy from the Clinton co-presidency.
He's completely full of crap here. I have never seen a single shred of evidence to suggest that a larger U.S. military would have done anything to ward off terrorist attacks against this country.
If anything, it's the exact opposite. Most of the morons in the Bush administration who ended up orchestrating the invasion of Iraq in 2003 had spent the latter half of the 1990s calling on the Clinton administration to invade Iraq as a response to every terrorist attack -- from the Khobar Towers to the USS Cole, etc. -- even though there was no evidence that Iraq had anything to do with those attacks.
9/11 didn't occur because the military was too small . . . it occurred because of malfeasance and incompetence at the highest levels of this country's government in BOTH the Clinton and Bush (43) administrations.
