Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The nation's largest organization representing black Americans is cutting staff and closing down some of its regional locations in the face of declining donations. The moves come on the heels of a flip-flop on abortion and some black leaders saying abortion is distracting from civil rights issues.
The NAACP took an official position in favor of abortion in early 2004, a stance it quietly rescinded months later after significant backlash.
A poll conducted by Black Enterprise Magazine found that 60% of African Americans disapproved of the decision.
Then, last year, the Revs. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Joseph Lowery kicked off a three day event in Dallas and said abortion has been used too much to block discussion of issues like voting rights and affirmative action.
Now, the NAACP is cutting its staff of 119 down to 70 and with close some of the offices around the nation that it operates.
"We are right-sizing our organization to meet present circumstances," interim President and CEO Dennis Hayes told The Baltimore Sun.
NAACP communications director Richard McIntyre told the newspaper that "All our bills are paid, and there's money in the bank" but said the organization has used about $10 million in reserve funds to pay bills and debts because of a downturn in donations.
"It's the same type of situation where if you find yourself going to your savings more than you would like to, you're going to make changes," McIntyre said.
Mychal Massie, chairman of the black conservative group Project 21, told the Cybercast News Service that the NAACP's financial woes are no surprise because it ignores the real plight of black Americans on issues such as abortion.
"[T]hey're not addressing the very real ills in the black community" such as "out-of-control abortion, which amounts to nothing more than black genocide."
In fact, abortion has adversely affected the African-American community and Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., notes that abortion has disproportionately affected black Americans.
While black women constitute about 13% of the childbearing population, they have over one-third of the abortions. The abortion rate of black women is three times higher than that of white women and 60% of African-American women who become pregnant will have an abortion.
More than 14 million abortions have been done on black women and abortion businesses are frequently located in minority communities.
"I join the voices of thousands across America who can no longer sit idly by and allow this horrible spirit of murder to cut down," King says. "If the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is to live, our babies must live."
Meanwhile, polls show black Americans are pro-life and supporting pro-life candidates in greater margins than before.
In an August 2004 survey sponsored by Pace University and Rock the Vote, 54 percent of all Americans declared themselves pro-life while just 44 percent said they supported legal abortion. However, African-American voters took a pro-life position by a larger 59 to 42 percent margin.
Maybe they will eventually realize that the left's entire agenda is not in the best interests of Blacks.

Not really on topic, but has anyone ever explained why Blacks are apparently okay with having the term “colored” in this organization’s name?
Good question. The whole country would have suffered, but the biggest immediate losers would have been blacks and unions.
It’s historical. The politically correct term for blacks has varied over the years. In earlier years, they prefered “colored” to “black,” and then that changed.
The preferred term now is “African American,” but it’s a bit unwieldy, so “black” is permitted.
Or you are allowed to say “persons of color.”

Great, so Al, Jesse and Joseph (the 3 stooges?) want the NAACP to talk about the right to vote, a right blacks have had for decades, and the preservation of affirmative action, something that has in general hurt the black population’s self-reliance. Great agenda guys! With leaders like this, who needs the KKK!
I’m sorry, but “people of color” is the same thing as “colored people”.
The race baiters can whine all they want, but it’s the same thing.
One of my co-workers put a sign on our recycling bins that said “white paper” and “paper of color”.
Many were not amused.

After reading up on its history, I discovered that the idea of legal abortion was first popularized by a white women, Margaret Sanger, who was the founder of the National Birth Control League, which is now known as Planned Parenthood.
Sanger was a lifelong champion of birth control and Eugenics (the movement devoted to "improving" the human species by control of hereditary factors in reproduction). For a number of years she edited a magazine called the Birth Control Review. Here she gave a platform for numerous articles on these issues, often written by racists, Nazi sympathizers, and/or Eugenicists.
(Note: Margaret Sanger was also a vocal admirer of Adolph Hitler, at least until 1939. I really wish more people understood that Planned Parenthood's roots are deeply and firmly planted in the same eugenics movement that gave the world Auschwitz.)
Margaret Sanger called for the sterilization of "genetically inferior races". In 1939, she organized her "Negro Project" and wrote "the poorer areas, particularly in the South... are producing alarmingly more than their share of future generations."
Sanger wrote "The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the Minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members".
I was shocked to learn the number of black women who have had an abortion since the United States Supreme Court legalized it in 1973. Since that time, the number of pre-born lives extinguished is approximately 32 million which includes over ten million black babies.
That is about one third or more of the black population in the United States!
Over the past ten years, I have counseled and picketed at abortion clinics across the country. I was particularly struck one Saturday morning at a clinic in Virginia. We arrived there at 8 AM to counsel and demonstrate. The clinic opened at 9 AM. Within a one hour period, I saw at least thirty to forty young black women (some with men and some without) entering this clinic to have abortions performed as if it were NOTHING. It was like getting up and going to a restaurant for Saturday morning breakfast.
They had no shame attached to their actions. As a matter of fact, these young women and their boyfriends were angry at us for reminding them that they had another choice. I will never, ever forget the story of a young black girl I met at an abortion clinic in Los Angeles one Saturday morning. I was protesting near the clinic when I saw the young lady approach the front door.
I talked to her, and tried to encourage her to put her baby up for adoption. She said it was too late to make that decision. The young lady then told me her story. She said she had gone into the clinic that Thursday. The doctor had injected something into her womb. For three days the baby KICKED AND GASPED FOR LIFE. On the third day, the baby died. She told me that when the baby expired, it was devastating to her. She also told me she would never ever be able to overcome the experience.
I asked the girl why she chose to go through the process. She said she was encouraged to do this by her mother and boyfriend. That employees in the clinic told her she wouldn't feel anything. They said that she was carrying a fetus and NOT A BABY and that she could not afford to take care of a baby at her age. I asked how old she was. She replied that she was thirteen!
Blacks are slowly becoming anti illegal immigration as they watch their school and neighborhoods over run by Hispanics. Black youths being beaten up in schools dominated by Hispanic youths on a daily basis in LA, and the school admin dominated by Hispanics would give detention to the Hispanic attackers and suspend the Black students after the fights. This is going to be a source of division in the Dem coalition. Another thing is blacks tend to look down on homosexuals. I think within 20 years, the GOP has a very good chance of changing the black political allegiance from Dem to conservative GOP.
Locally, the NAACP has lost all of its veteran 1950’s and 1960’s civil rights leadership to old age. These are the folks who literally marked with MLKing, who went to jail, got sprayed with fire hoses, etc.
The current crop of leaders are poor leaders, and pick their fights unwisely. They don’t know what to fight for, and can’t fight if they need to. They literally are left pushing to rename a street “MLKing Blvd” as their only real mission.
The younger black leadership — the ones that obviously survived the huge abortion rate — won’t touch the local NAACP chapter with a 10-foot pole.
Of course, the liberal white people give their annual donation and lip service.
I suspect that the situation is the same all over the country.

Look for a whole new batch of suddenly discovered examples of ‘racism’. It’s a sure-fire way to get those contributions up.
