Civil rights attorneys are on a national crusade to force Medicaid to pay for abortions when the mother's health is in jeopardy. Monday, they took that years-long fight to the Georgia Supreme Court.
Currently, Georgia women who have abortions must foot the bill unless their life is in danger. So doctors at health clinics across Georgia are seeing poor women who can't afford abortions risk their own health by continuing dangerous pregnancies, argued New York-based attorney Louise Melling, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Reproductive Freedom Project.
The ACLU filed a lawsuit in Fulton County in 2003 on behalf of an unnamed woman, several health clinics and a doctor who consider the current policy unconstitutional. But in December, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Christopher Brasher tossed out the suit, in part because the woman didn't first ask for a hearing before the Georgia Department of Community Health, the agency that determines which abortions Medicaid will cover.
The woman, who suffers from paralysis, spina bifida and kidney problems, said her doctor advised her not to go forward with her pregnancy because it would seriously jeopardize her health and probably lead to dialysis treatment during pregnancy.
She went ahead with the abortion and filed a lawsuit, claiming that Medicaid refused to pay because her life was not in danger.
The woman, already on a tight budget, spent some of her own money and had to borrow $700 for the abortion. Melling said the state pays for prenatal care for poor women and should also pay when women decide not to continue a pregnancy. She calls it a double standard that unconstitutionally violates a woman's right to privacy.

As a mother of a daughter with the same condition, you would think she would have thought about this 'before'. She's complaining about the money, did we sleep with the guy? Where is he? How do you spell responsibility?
She would be shocked if the court ruled they have say over if and when she could have sex (since she can't control herself and she wants them to rule on giving her the peoples money), or ask for the disabled to be sterilized. There are sick eugenic POS out there waiting for this to happen. When someone is this irresponsible, especially when they know the lack of respect for life by others (in her condition pre-pregnancy), and obviously by herself.
The last paragraph at the link informs that the ACLU has won more than a dozen similar battles and states have voluntarily begun paying for abortions that doctors deem medically necessary, not just life-threatening. My friends, this is the slippery slope... if the state can get rid of the child, the state can get rid of her.
Oh, btw...
If she spent ‘some’ of her money and had to borrow $700, she must have been quite along in the pregnancy.
It might be worth it to pay for abortions with taxpayers’ money. Soon all of the pro abortionists will be gone.
Most of those who advocate abortions on demand are their own best arguments for abortions.
To find a constitutional right to abortion requires a most convoluted, and tortured interpretation.
