Bush’s Push on Immigration Tests His Base (FR Mentioned)
NY Times ^ | June 3, 2007 | JIM RUTENBERG and CARL HULSE

Posted on 06/02/2007 10:22:51 AM PDT by nj26

President Bush’s advocacy of an immigration overhaul and his attacks on critics of the plan are provoking an unusually intense backlash from conservatives who form the bulwark of his remaining support, splintering his base and laying bare divisions within a party whose unity has been the envy of Democrats.

It has pitted some of Mr. Bush’s most stalwart Congressional and grass-roots backers against him, sparking a vitriol that has at times exceeded anything seen yet between Mr. Bush and his supporters, who have generally stood with him through the toughest patches of his presidency. Those supporters now view him as pursuing amnesty for foreign law breakers when he should be focusing on border security.

Postings on conservative Web sites this week have gone so far as to call for Mr. Bush’s impeachment, and usually friendly radio hosts, commentators and Congressional allies are warning that he stands to lose supporters — a potentially damaging development, they say, when he needs all the backing he can get on other vital matters like the war in Iraq.

“I think President Bush hurts himself every time he says it is not amnesty,” said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, referring to the bill’s legalization process for immigrants. “We are not all that stupid.”

This week, in discussing Mr. Bush’s recent comments accusing conservative critics of the immigration legislation of fear-mongering, Rush Limbaugh told listeners: “I just wish he hadn’t done it because he’s not going to lose me on Iraq, and he’s not going to lose me on national security. But he might lose some of you.”

Such sentiments have reverberated through talk radio, conservative publications like National Review and Fox News. They have also appeared on Web sites including RedState.com and FreeRepublic.com...

357 replies to an article published only yesterday!! WOW!! I’ve been trying to keep my trap shut on this subject. I’ve read along as our American Politics group discussed it back and forth for a while now. Without comment (so as not to enrage our cute little liberal friends) I’ve just watched and listened for the outrage to come on. I saw very little of significance. (Thank You Katie for sending faxes to all the senators...) We can see by Boxer’s letter that we little people in fly over country mean nothing at all to our representatives once they get put in Washington.
-
Is there any other subject which has incited so many to respond with such indignation and anger as this? I think not since 9/11 has there been such outrage but I’m really afraid that what scares our politicians isn’t the ground swell of public reaction, but for how long it lasts.THAT is the true measure of what they really consider to be important. The pupose in doing this now is MOSTLY so that we willforget by the time it comes to get re-elected. Plenty of time to us ‘forget’, to spin the reason they voted for it, to buy time to get big pork money back to their districts... In other words, they know we’ll forgetall about this by the time they need us again. Trust me... this why it’s important to get it gone so soon. The war issue will help make us forget, the early prez elections will erase a lot...plenty to fill the brains of the sheeple who will willingly put these traitors back in office again next time.
-
BTW, the most likely to lose votes at election time will be Republicans who voted for it... you can bet their Dem challengers will ALL be “anti-illegal POS legislation” when it comes to dumping on their GOP opponents to get elected.)
-
I’ve read SO much on this subject and it seems to me that not ONLY do Bush, the Dems and the RINO’s know exactly what this POS legislation will do... but that tey also know that well over 90% of Americans DISAPPROVE!!! Where the hell are they geting these figures of only 52% are against it is BEYOND ME!!! Even at 52% it’s still a majority (weak as it is) and that would not explain the great rush to finalize the deal as if Americans were anxiously chomping at the bit to absorb all these illegals as quickly as possible. (We have some good, solid figures of maybe 5-110 million illegals including their families.... give or take about 20 million, right?)
-
Also, Have you noticed no particular (NAMED!!) polling agency is taking credit for these kinds of numbers. (IE:. Zogby, Harris, etc...?) All we have is congressonal mouthpieces spewing out the usual opinions wthout merit and the MSM is gleefully producing this trash talk as the way things are really shaping up in D.C.!! Gee... it seems that now the initial “firestorm of patriotism” is dying down they can get on with ‘business as usual’... that means the business of screwing the American sheeple from within the walls of D.C. and their compliantlapdogs n the MSM!!!
-
Look folks... Calling your representatves or senators just one time IS NOT going to work. It is NOT going to defeat this.... The D.C. boys are trying to play this off as if Americans only cared for a few days and now that it’s over they can slither back nto D.C. and contine their work omn this anti- American travesty of justice and constitutional outrageousness!!!
-
Even Reagan (publically stated) that amnesty was a big mistake, though much worse because provisions for better border security were stricken from the original plan. How can these morons think this version will fly with the American sheeple when they refuse to even fund the building of a simple fence?? -
Aemricans DON’T trust this!! The MSM is compliant in propagating the lie!! The congressional representatives of BOTH parties are lying!!
-
And what about Mr. G.W.BUSH!!?? ..... BUSH is not only compliant, but purposefully and with great ambition promulgating this POS legislation AND that is well known to be unconstitutional AND that it is a deliberate and decietful act designed to placate Mexico into a feeling of being in unison with U.S.A. (and Canadian) interests in the SPP plan AND that SPP plan of co-opting the U.S.A. into the back room dealings in the creation of a New American Union is not only unconstitutional, but, a milestone in the effort to destroy all American soverignty by encompqassig it within a bigger power circle...
-
and.... Bush knows that...WITHIN THIS FRAMEWORK, THE UNITED STATES’ ABILITY TO HAVE AUTONOMOUS AUTHORITY OVER OUR FUTURE WILL NO LONGER EXIST!!!
-
THIS IS TREASON OF THE HIGHEST ACCORD.... THIS IS KNOWINGLY SELLING AMERICA OUT TO THE WORLD (New World Order or not!!)
-
Ross Perot was partially right about that giant sucking sound we’ll be hearing . But it won’t be the sound of U.S.A. jobs going overseas.... that giant sucking sound is the giant toilet called congress flushing us all down the drain!!! THIS IS REALLY IS A TOTAL FLUSHING OF AMERICA (as we know it)... DOWN THE SHITTER FOLKS!!!
-
DON’T stop with just one phone call or fax. BURN THEIR PHONE AND FAX LINES OFF THE WALL TIL THEY DROP THIS POS!!!
-
For the first time in a long time I’m in on this one. I’m on this tomorrow in the am. I have Wed and Thurs off... I intend to be on the phone. I’m also thinking of forming some sort of group that truely does represent (and motivate) the sheeple to kick well-deserving congressional representatives dead in the ass... If we have to break our foot off in their ass... then so be it!! But they need to FEEL IT when WE speak out... and stop disregarding America as a “has-been” operation!!
-
IMHO.... THESE ARE NOT JUST “IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES”.... THEY ARE REASON ENOUGH TO INSIST ON PLENTY OF JAIL TIME TO GO WITH THESE TREASONOUS CRIMESS AS WELL.............As usual, this is JMHO!

Kennedy has done more damage to this country than anyone.Kennedy's been involved in every Amnesty and 3rd world immigration bill since 1965. And this is Kennedy's bill too. Before 1965 most immigrants were from Europe and they became Americanized.Since when does congress follow the constitution? Is McCain-Feingold,dept of education, this $3 trillion annual federal budget, constitutional? You can say anything you want to. We still have freedom of speech.

The ire of conservatives is being directed at Bush more than Kennedy because Bush was supposed to be one of us. We expect this anti-American crap from Kennedy. But we feel betrayed by Bush and every conservative who supports the amnesty bill.

Nonsense...if the President intended to slow the immigration even a little, he could fine employers big time and make them responsible for medical care for the illegals they hire. We don’t have to send them home; they would go home if the job market dried up. If we were serious about enforcing the law, the border would have been secured first. They will give amnesty to these people including gang members and no border security will ever be implemented.

In a few years, we will have at least 40 million-then they will want to give another amnesty. Our country will resemble a third world hell hole by them. You should see what has happened to some of the smaller neighborhoods in Georgia.

This bill is about getting cheap labor (really slave labor) for the Republicans and permanent majority status for the democrats. President Bush really believes in this-no doubt. However, he is wrong!!! Also, I think at the end of a term any president is looking for a legacy-unfortunately this legacy will be the demise of the Republican Party. I will not vote for anyone who supports this bill which means I won’t vote for Chambliss or for Isakson. I fully expect Georgia will have two Democrat Senators in the near future. Isakson is hiding out. Chambliss was heckled even in South Georgia where he is/was very popular. Peggy Noonan is correct; President Bush has torn the Republican Party asunder. I don’t know how you can put the pieces back together if this bill passes. I do know that I will change my party affiliation to Independent. If Rove thinks the base has no choice and must vote Republican, he is in for a very hard lesson in 2008.

I heard a segment where Savage said (paraphrase), ‘The liberal George Bush is going to give billions to fight aids in Africa-not that the people will ever see this money, we should raise the minimum wage for Americans since we are so willing to give our money to foreigners’. Actually, the minimum has been the same for years-I could care a less if they raise it.

I think Bush is legacy building somewhat...although I do believe he thinks this is the right things to do. He is not so much trying to destroy the conservative base as he is indifferent to destroying the conservative base. A true politician like Clinton would never do something like this even if he believed it to be right because Politics trump all. This is not the case with Pres. Bush. However, he is completely wrong on this issue. He has been in Washington too long to understand the problems we face because of this massive illegal immigration.

“be razed the ground and rebuilt.”

As fringe right crazy as people will think that sounds i think it will be the only way. I think in our lifetimes we will see a second civil war.

Savage is an old fashioned small government conservative. He was very impressed with Brown because of the troops. Mike has a good heart and feels bad for the little guy-hence his stance on the minimum wage. He is a more conservative O’Reilly. He really believe the little guy is getting shafted and has believed for a long time that Bush is a no good liberal who will cause enormous damgage to this country. I agree with him actually.

Here you go. Its great because its commercial free. Also I just open up my Itunes program (Its Free if you need it), and right click and hit update. I get the latest three hours. The nice thing is I can listen on my computer or transfer it to my MP3 player. Then I can listen to Savage on my way to work, or listen to him on my stereo. Its pretty easy to set up. There are instructions on this link if you need help setting it up. It took me about 5 minutes.

And if not, i saw that you can just download the file to your computer, do you still get the full file that way?

Yes. Bush is wrong on immigration. He takes a stand because he believes in it or believes it is good politics. One or the other. People who believe any President intentionally tries to destroy America or elect the other party in power are completely irrational and incapable of reasoning. The weiner syndrome of perhaps being an educated fool but utterly incapable of reasoning their way out of paper bag.

Boarder, Language, Culture.

What boarder? Like in a boarding house?

Savage has always been right about Bush.

It's so cool you let a voice on the radio provide opinions for you.

Ha Ha! You must really have your panties in a wad!

Your fascination with other people's panties is disturbing.
Registered sex offender perhaps?

Someone on another thread connected the dots and found out that this number is paid for by Soros and his front groups. Why am I not surprised?

I used this number yesterday to call both my senators and express my outrage. So glad dear ole George paid for it!
