I would suggest that liberals hate Bush more for what he represents than for who he actually is... Bush is the National Dad. They hate him because he (figuratively) won't let them smoke pot and have sex in their bedrooms after school. It's useless to look for rational explanations - it's all about the symbolism.

Why? Because he is a winner and they are losers.

The hate him because he’s pro-American, pro-life, and anti-tax. Not too much else matters to them.

a young girl blurts out a vulgar and ugly little ditty about President Bush Did he pull the car over to the side of the road and offer the young lady the choice of apologizing or walking? That's what I would have done.
I don't hold kids responsible for the transmitted politics of their parents, but manners are another story.
The basic question asked by the post is a worthy subject of inquiry. Bush Derangement Syndrome is a symptom of a larger cultural derangement that is as serious as the genuine enthusiasm for Soviet totalitarianism that dominated virtually all of our intellectual or quasi-intellectual institutions from the 1930s through the 1960s.
To: Chuckmorse
They hate Bush, who is their friend and ally, because he is a Christian.

In retrospect, I wonder if we would be better off had Bush lost Florida. No!! We would be better off if Al had accepted defeat on election night. I'm sure that one day he will.

Charles Krauthammer has named the syndrome...if my memory serves me, I think he calls it “Bush derangement syndrome.”

They hate Bush since he represents everything they hate, America, Christianity, the military, family values and decency.

Liberals are ultimately driven by a consuming hatred of everything traditionally American. It’s as if they are some sort of modern day Gnostics attempting to prove their spiritual worth by condemning the physical aspects of their existence.

What drives this hatred that causes otherwise enlightened liberalsChuck, this is the reason for your confusion. You started with a false premise that liberals are enlightened.

Women who get this worked up about abortion invariably have had one - and deep down, regret it.
When you do something so abhorrent as killing your own child, you spend the rest of your life doing one of two things -
repenting of the decision and doing everything to make up for it
or
vehemently defending your decision as “right”

“Liberals”, ie, Leftists, NEED to destroy everything traditionally American (family, patriotism, individualism, religious faith) in order to “remake” the society in their image.

With the exception of men who support abortion because it gives them an “out” from responsibility,
the average (non-activist) person who gets emotionally frenetic about abortion will be as I have described.
Any other FReepers have thoughts, supporting or dissenting?
