This will continue to be a "quagmire" of epic proportion - brought to you courtesy of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party (The RINO's therein).

'Quagmire' - like that word? The Democrats do as they compare the current War on Terror (excuse me can't use that any more, courtesy a specific House Committee, don't know but guess their Senate brethren follow suit). So I guess it will become a Dem word for anything this Administration does.

Just an aside but I am surprised at the number of votes, on important issues, being missed by those engaged in further election pursuits. And how about Hillary and Obama voting against the Minimum Wage Hike and Katrina Relief. I just thought these things were so basic and important to Dems. [sarcasm off]

Amazing. They told us we were ignorant and had the bill all wrong. But it seems a lot of the amendments are to address the concerns of people who feel our reps are GIVING this country away.

They have some good stuff in there *IF* we are forced to have a bill at all. But they need to kill the anchor baby rule and have ironclad regs in place to make sure these people don’t jump the citizenship line. They also need to toughen laws concerning identity theft and fraud committed by illegals.

Billing their home countries for tax-payer covered services is a must too.

Plus a host of other things I’m sure I’m forgetting.

You are so right on that one.

Comments on Amendments by number for those not specific in what the amendment does:
1.Adds additional rights (child advocates, permanent protection, protection against abuse) and authorizes appropriations for this amendments (6).

2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10. Space holder for future filing.

It's amazing many refer back to #1. Or are holding a space for future action.

If the original compromise is this bad in that it needs 108 amendments ... then that tells me it's a no-go. We need to start over with a blank sheet of paper.

First step is to determine which laws now on the books are 'bad' and need to be repelled.

Second step is to act on those laws on the books which are the 'good' ones and enforce them and in the case of the fence build it.

Third step is to hold an emergency election today and "throw all da bums out"! (I'd keep them there to figure it out but why throw good money after bad.) It's apparent they are not earning their keep.

McCain’s amendment 1190 seems to be misleading. It says “Not later than the date on which status is adjusted under this section, the alien establishes the payment of any applicable Federal tax liability by establishing that....”

To me, this looks like more lipstick on a pig. They have to make an “agreement for payment” to pay back taxes only if they want to apply for a green card (”status is adjusted”). If they just want to stay and work here, payment not required. Watch for their talking points to include the claim that illegals have to pay back taxes.

SA 1190. Mr. MCCAIN (for himself, Mr. GRAHAM, Mr. BURR, and Mr. SPECTER) submitted an amendment intended to be proposed to amendment SA 1150 proposed by Mr. REID (for Mr. KENNEDY (for himself and Mr. SPECTER)) to the bill S. 1348, to provide for comprehensive immigration reform and for other purposes; as follows:

On page 292 redesignate paragraphs (3) as (4) and (4) as (5).

On page 292, between lines 33 and 34, insert the following:

``(3) PAYMENT OF INCOME TAXES.—

``(A) IN GENERAL.—Not later than the date on which status is adjusted under this section, the alien establishes the payment of any applicable Federal tax liability by establishing that—

``(i) no such tax liability exists;

``(ii) all outstanding liabilities have been paid; or

``(iii) the alien has entered into an agreement for payment of all outstanding liabilities with the Internal Revenue Service.

``(B) APPLICABLE FEDERAL TAX LIABILITY.—For purposes of clause (i), the term `applicable Federal tax liability’ means liability for Federal taxes, including penalties and interest, owed for any year during the period of employment required by subparagraph (D)(i) for which the statutory period for assessment of any deficiency for such taxes has not expired.

``(C) IRS COOPERATION.—The Secretary of the Treasury shall establish rules and procedures under which the Commissioner of Internal Revenue shall provide documentation to an alien upon request to establish the payment of all taxes required by this subparagraph.

``(D) IN GENERAL.—The alien may satisfy such requirement by establishing that—

``(i) no such tax liability exists;

``(ii) all outstanding liabilities have been met; or

``(iii) the alien has entered into an agreement for payment of all outstanding liabilities with the Internal Revenue Service and with the department of revenue of each State to which taxes are owed.

That is an excellent point. I have a suspicion this bill is purposely complex and unreadable by the average citizen...and even many above-average..

One of the questions I ask every day when I call Senator Nelson’s office (I already know what Martinez will say- hell he helped write it) is...has the Senator READ the bill yet?

Has anyone on the Senator’s staff read the bill yet?

So far- the answers have been- “No” or “I don’t know”...
