Australian pub bars heterosexuals

A gay pub in the city of Melbourne has won the right to ban heterosexuals - the first time such legislation has been passed in Australia.

The Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled the Peel Hotel could ban patrons based on their sexual orientation.

The pub's management said the move would stop groups of heterosexual men and women abusing gay people.

Civil liberties groups have supported the decision.

'SAFE BALANCE'

The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says.

Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency.

He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

Civil liberties groups said homosexuals should be allowed to relax in places without fear of bullying or intimidation.

Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.

“The tribunal’s president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC’s Phil Mercer in Sydney says.”

- My impression is that most gay people enjoy attention quite a lot.

I can see that homosexuals might like to have a bar where they can relax among their own without fear about being laughed at.

But the question is, why can’t other groups do the same? Where do you draw the lines? (As if I had to ask.)

I’d grant them that ‘right’. That would then make it equally acceptable to ban homosexuals from any establishment.

Unless some groups are more equal than others.

Living near San Francisco, I can assure you that straight women do indeed enjoy hanging out in gay bars since it allows them to flirt (not to mention compare handbags) with men without any chance of complications.

Horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, “Why the long face”?

Answer, “I just got kicked out of a gay bar for being straight.” “I thought is was a bunch of horse-hockey”.

Sounds fine to me...
So long as other bars are free to exclude gays.

Just saying...

I would drink in any bar with a door sign that says, “If you’re a queer, don’t come in here!”

Of course, your point is well taken. The idea of passing laws that prevent people congregating with those they choose, rather than a congregation dictated by Leftist theorists, is part and parcel of a Leftist egalitarian attack on traditional society.

Those who have woken up lately, to realize with astonishment that our immigration laws since 1965 actually favor non-White, Third World immigrants, over those from the traditional stocks that settled America, should realize the obvious connection. The "Civil Rights" movement in America was not a celebration of American values--as is sadly taught in many schools--but a deliberate attack on those values. The traditional American view of liberty, comes from the principles recognized in Magna Carta, including property rights and commercial freedom. The "Civil Rights" movement was a direct attack on those principles. And almost to a man, those who voted for the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 & 1965, in Washington, were the same people who put through the Immigration Reform Act of 1965.

I just wanted to applaud your tongue in cheek point; but apologize for getting this thread off the particular Australian point.

So would a bar be permitted to ban homosexuals in fear of date rape drugs being administered to unsuspecting members of the same sex (and yes this happens)?

Or is it okay to practice heterophobia but not homophobia? Sometimes it isn’t “fear” but precaution.

“Australia’s equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.”

Some animals ARE more equal than others. They got an exemption. It didn’t set precedence to strike down the protection of sexual beliefs.

Good. Pray to God that our courts rule the same. Because it ALSO works the other way.

And the underlying principle is that a private business owner has the right to exclude people from his business as long as it is not done on the basis of gender, race, etc.
