I've never watched any of Fred Thompson's acting, and didn't pay any attention to him when he was in the Senate...so I remember him mainly as a figure in the background in the 1973 soap opera the Sam Ervin hearings.

It's hard to see any of the supposed top 3 unifying the party. McCain may have the best voting record of the three but has been egregiously wrong on several important issues, and is just too old to be able to win. Giuliani is too liberal and too brittle. Romney is pretending to be a conservative now, but seems to hold conservatives in contempt--witness his remarks a while back attacking the efforts to save Terri Schiavo, and his more recent comments on homosexuals.

Never seen Hunt For Red October? He played Admiral Joshua Painter in that adaptation of Tom Clancy's book by the same name.
