Terri Schiavo Family Attorney, Brother Criticize GOP Prez Candidates

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Terri Schiavo's brother and the final attorney for her family are criticizing some of the leading Republican contenders for president. They say the candidates are ill-informed about the facts surrounding the debate over Terri's life and the reasons behind the legislation Congress approved trying to help prevent her euthanasia death.

During the first GOP primary debate, Schindler family attorney David Gibbs says they demonstrated that they do not understand the important disability issues involved in the 2005 Terri Schiavo case.

In comments on the case, Gov. Mitt Romney said he thought it "was a mistake" for Congress to get involved and the matter should have been left at the state level."

Sen. John McCain said Congress "probably acted too hastily" and former mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to see the matter as merely a "family dispute."

Gibbs says that only Sen. Sam Brownback and Rep. Duncan Hunter, both of whom voted for the bill to allow the Schindler family to take their case to save Terri to federal courts, properly understand the issue.

He told LifeNews.com in a statement that Brownback and Hunter correctly pointed out that "all Congress did was to give Terri a chance to appeal her state death sentence to a federal court and reminding Americans of President Ronald Reagan's admonition to always 'err on the side of life.'"

"America needs to know what really happened to this lady because Terri's death by dehydration should never have been permitted in a civilized society," Gibbs explained. "These candidates must understand the truth because if elected, they will be making policies that impact all of us."

Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, agreed, and told LifeNews.com that his sister's case "was not about someone's 'right-to-die', nor was it an 'end-of-life' issue as was so often reported."

"Instead, heinous criminals on death row have more protection and are treated with more dignity than people like Terri. Congress saw this and intervened to protect her," he explained.

"Not only was it appropriate for Congress to try and help Terri, but it is what they are morally obligated to do in such cases," Schindler added.

I agree. Based on the Preamble, Amendment 5, and Amendment 14 of the Constitution, it is the duty of our government to protect the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of all citizens, persons, and our posterity.

I wish I still had Bobby Schindler’s faith in the goodness of all mankind. But I don’t. I’ve spoken with enough people who opposed Terri’s right to live that I no longer believe it’s a result of their ignorance. They knew then, and they know now, that Terri wasn’t dying or brain dead. It was never a matter of them being under-informed, or ill-informed. It was a matter of them approving of her murder, knowing all along that it was murder. You can supply them with every shred of evidence, and they will still insist that it was right to starve and dehydrate her to death. The Schindlers are a charitable, gracious, and loving family. God shines through them.

Sometimes I think it is because deep down (the majority of them) are REALLY uncomfortable around mentally handicapped people. They hate the idea of someone being mentally handicapped so much, that I think they transfer that disdain to the people actually suffering from the malady.

For a while I was convinced the deathocrats wanted Terri dead so that they could show that they had power over Bush and the Christian community. The libertarians wanted Terri dead so that they could show that they weren't like Bush or the Christian community.

I don't know what precisely it was that inspired so much hatred towards Terri. Perhaps we'll never know for certain. Perhaps it's best if we never know. I get nervous about studying the reasons for evil, because I think a person can inadvertently open themselves up to evil.

Most of the individuals I’ve spoken with who wanted Terri dead had/have/will have family members they didn’t want to be burdened with. Usually it’s an elderly parent. They don’t want the inheritance used up on medical care, and they don’t want to change Mommy’s and Daddy’s diapers. They don’t want to do this for six months, much less a lifetime.

The most vocal euthanasists I’ve met have already participated in the euthanasia of someone in their own family. Usually that participation consists of ordering, authorizing, or condoning the euthanasia. Sometimes that involves starvation/dehydration. Sometimes removal of breathing assistance. Sometimes withholding antibiotics. Sometimes a drug overdose. The methods are limited only by the imagination.

For every one of those people killed, how many people had to carry it out and approve of it? At minimum, you need a doctor, nursing staff, and a family member.
