DUBAI (AFP) - Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri praised the slain Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah and called his death a "good omen for victory" against the US-led coalition in Afghanistan, in a video posted on the Internet Tuesday.
Dadullah, known as the Taliban's top military strategist, was killed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province on May 11 in a joint Afghan and international operation.
One-legged Dadullah was the most senior Taliban figure to be killed since the 2001 toppling of the extremist group's government.
A purported voice recording of Zawahiri confirms Dadullah's death in the video produced by As-Sahab, a media outfit that specialises in Al-Qaeda online material.
"I announce to you today the passing of a hero among the heroes of the jihad in this era. A knight amongst its knights... Mullah Dadullah," Zawahiri says in the video which features a picture of Zawahiri next to footage of Dadullah apparently firing heavy weaponry and meeting with Taliban fighters.
"The crusader forces and their agents, the Afghan intelligence and armed forces surrounded his position in the Helmand province... and he, his (blood) brother and some other brothers were martyred," Zawahiri says.
A link to the video, which features English subtitles, was provided to AFP by the Washington-based Site Institute.
Fugitive Zawahiri also assures Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar that Dadullah's death is a "good omen of victory" in the six-minute long video.
Dadullah was said to be close to Mullah Omar and Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, with whom he claimed to communicate on a regular basis.
Dadullah managed to face down the might of the US military, according to Zawahiri. "He (Dadullah) threatened the Americans and said to them, if you possess atomic weapons, then we possess martyrdom seekers," Zawahiri said.
Zawahiri frequently emerges in video or audio tapes to speak for the Al-Qaeda network, the last time in an audio recording in March.

Is he hoping for a confrontation on that front: martyrdom seekers v. atomic weapon? Sounds like an interesting fight.
