PAYNE SPRINGS, Texas — Two Henderson County sheriff's deputies were shot and killed and another was wounded Thursday afternoon while responding to a domestic disturbance near this East Texas town.
The shooting occurred just hours after the deputies had participated in the county's peace officers memorial to honor those slain in the line of duty, sheriff's Lt. Pat McWilliams said.
McWilliams said the gunman also was shot and taken to a hospital. He did not know the man's condition. A woman who was in the home was not injured and was being interviewed by Texas Rangers.
"We've got to work the crime scene as gruesome as it is," he told Dallas-Fort Worth television station KDFW.
McWilliams said the wounded deputy's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Rebecca Berkley, spokeswoman for East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, said the hospital had been advised to expect two patients. She had no immediate conditions on the two people.
One of the officers killed was in uniform and the other was a plain clothes investigator, McWilliams said.

Prayers for the wounded and the families of the slain. Domestic disputes are some of the most dangerous calls for law enforcement responders. It’s not unheard of for both the disputants to turn on the cops.
This is only about 20 minutes away from me. I was shocked when I heard this on the radio today. Prayers for those families!

Prayers for the families. Some of the counties in Texas have very few Sheriff’s. Losing three in such a short time will put a hurt on law enforcement in that area. Just bad news all around.
That is absolutely correct. May these deputies rest in peace, and prayers for their families.
So true. The first female officer in my hometown was killed by a man being taken into custody by some other officers. She was not on duty; she was on her way home, but she was familiar with the family, because she'd been called there before, so she decided to check it out. She was standing off the porch when the officers brought the man out, but he grabbed the officer's service revolver and started shooting. She was killed instantly, leaving her husband with two small children.
God Bless the families of these two officers.

We used to live out that way. I was always surprised when awful things happened, as it seemed so idyllic in many ways, but bad stuff did happen.

I just saw a brief Alert on Fox about this today and it caught my attention because I used to live in Woodville (near Jasper and Beaumont).
To really appreciate the men and women in law enforcement one only has to be a victim of crime and have them show up in a time when you need them. They have very dangerous jobs, are usually not appreciated, and are underpaid for the dangers they face.
I was a victim of a crime once, and made a point to write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper thanking the professional law enforcement staff I dealt with (and the sheriff), and asking my county commissioners to support these public servants (LEO) when making budgeting decisions.
Recently I was watching one of those Cops shows and there was a shootout between family members when an officer responded. I watched amazed as a little old white haired lady started assaulting the officer who responded to keep one of the two armed of (her) family members from killing each other.
There are some bad apples in uniform, but these are few and far between when you consider (and I am talking about in rural areas like I live) the young LEO who are trying to raise families on a ridiculously low salary, and facing the dangers they do.
In my rural county here in Tennessee they have meth lab makers (drug crazed and dangerous), imbred hillbillies and domestic violence (where guns are plentiful), that understaffed LEO have to deal with daily. I applaud them, and pray for their safety.

Several old-time cops that I know have always told me that domestic disturbances are the calls that will get you shotgunned more than any other call.
