Moscow agrees to tone down anti-US rhetoric

Russia is to tone down its increasingly harsh anti-US rhetoric but the two countries failed in talks on Tuesday to make any progress on the issues that divide them – including Kosovo and missile defence. As Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, ended talks with Vladimir Putin at the Russian president’s residence outside Moscow, she brushed off concerns that US missile defence plans posed a threat to Russia’s security. “The US needs to move forward to use technology to defend itself and we’re going to do that,” Ms Rice said after the talks. “I don’t think that anyone expects the US to permit a veto on American security interests.” Relations between the two countries have been strained by US plans to base components of a missile interceptor system near Russia’s borders, in Poland and the Czech Republic, prompting talk on both sides of the Atlantic of a new cold war. Mr Putin appeared indirectly to compare the US to the Third Reich in a speech to veterans of the second world war during a Victory Day parade last week. His comments prompted a flurry of transatlantic phone calls and claims from the foreign ministry that the president’s remarks had been misinterpreted.

Among Russia’s numerous problems, I think a small but irksome issue is how the U.S. might Afghanistan while they took grievous untold losses, but couldn’t do it.

The Russians are trying to hide the fact that they 1. Called the US a Nazi state. 2. they openely flew the Soviet flag during their Victory day celebration. 3. They made the Hammer and Sickle the official emblem of the Russian Army.

Well, if democrats take the power in 2008 and withdraw the troops from there, the Afghans will scream and shout that they have defeated both the Soviet Union and the United States. They always do it when a previous conqueror leave this useless miserable land - till the next one’s coming in.

Russia is still full of communists, and they are not our friends. Everytime they are on the ropes we bail them out with foreign aid, and when they recover they bite us. Are the political critters just dumb or do they just not care?

“We have agreed to tone down our criticism of the arrogant imperialist Amerikanski running dogs. In return we expect them to cease their unilateral fascist agitation and encroachment into our legitimate sphere of influence.”

"they openely flew the Soviet flag during their Victory day celebration"
But it has been openly flying in Victory day all these eyars, in the Yeltsin years as well. This is not something which has just been brought back.
"They made the Hammer and Sickle the official emblem of the Russian Army."
This is not true. The flag was only made official for Victory day celebration only, not as a current official emblem. I already made a mention of that on this thread.

The thing is is that they should NEVER be flying the Soviet Flag or playing that anthem, even for Victory Day.

Why? There are Red Army soldiers today who fought under that flag. There are citizens whose relatives died under that flag. There is a symbolism to the flag that non Russians/Ukrainians/Belarussians do not understand.

Even in Western Ukraine, which agitated for UPA to be given full honors in V-Day parades, the hammer and sickle was represented. Denying the reality of the past is folly.

The Soviets crushed Germany under that Flag. If you are not comfortable with this fact, it’s your problem.

Should they also edit the photos in the history book which shows that flag flying over reichstag? Like it or not, that was a part of history.
