Aloha, from a haole. I’ve spent a lot of time on the Big Island, though.

Hawai’i, despite the words, isn’t so hung up on race as the mainland.

That's not what Obama said. I think he said he lived in fear of church burnings or pig roasts or something. ;-)

Reading this article I realized that a lot of it has no resemblance to the Islands. The races are so mixed here that most people don’t even think about it. Not that there isn’t any prejudices here, there is, but not as much as on the mainland (in my opinion).

Since there are already some controversial comments, a controversial suggestion: Hawaii was the first state without a European descended majority, and without many citizens of majority European or African descent in general. That could be why they aren't so hung up on race. Hopefully as other states lose their European descended majorities, race relations will begin to smooth out.

(both California, Texas--the two most populous states--and New Mexico and Arizona(?) have no 'racial' majority, if Latinos are not considered to be of European descent (even though a lot are)).

Arson suit.

Beg to differ..........BIL, lived on Maui for 14-15 years. Said his family and himself...would NEVER be totally accepted based on their WHITENESS. Nothing else.

Didn't matter if you were Mexican, Japanese, Columbian, Iraqi, as long as you were brown skinned...you weren't haole. And thus looked upon as "one of us".
