criticize illegal immigration, why must be a racist, even if you don’t know squat about me, what ethnic background i have, how “socially conscious” i am, how much i volunteer for the less fortunate, etc.

There is nothing wrong with criticizing illegal immigration...I've done it on this thread. Assuming that someone is illegal (or mentioning it before there is any evidence) is, indeed, racist.
Perhaps you can melt your guilt with a socially conscious good deed.
