On this previous post to Restornu I was almost tempted to say it and refrained. But in light of this post, I'll go ahead & say it:
The Smith-based doctrine of eternal marriage converts every person with two mates (Mate 1-their earthly partner now extended into the celestial; and Mate 2 - Christ) into a literal polygamist upon Christ marrying His Church in heaven.
(And even Joseph didn't embrace the idea of females having multiple marriage partners on heaven or earth...in fact, part of D&C 130 was explicitly written to head off Smith's wife, Emma, from a tit-for-tat worn pathway to the marriage altar).
MHG...good for you to broach a subject never discussed: Why do folks want to convert Christ into a heavenly adulterer?
[Oh, and let me pre-empt an argument I know is already forming out there...the fact that Christ will have "millions of brides" in heaven...the fact is that the Church in heaven is ONE Bride. We will be defined both by our diversity (Rev. 22:2) and our unity (Rev. 21:2).]
The other "polygamy in heaven" matter rarely if ever discussed is how LDS can get away with saying they don't believe in polygamy anymore when all they did was colonize it another dimension. No LDS member doubts that any LDS polygamist who died in good standing with the church, be it Joseph, Brigham, John Taylor, etc., isn't alive and well beyond the veil with multiple wives all around them.
So let me suggest more media questions for Mitt: "Mr. Romney, do you believe that polygamy is still being practiced in some of the degrees of heavenly or celestial life? If God sanctions it in the Celestial realm for eternity, aside from civil constraints, what's wrong with its practice on temporal earth? If it's still being practiced beyond the veil, wouldn't you say that makes it more difficult for leaders to condemn fundamentalist Mormons?"
Christ as our mate? We as couples should have an intimate relationship with Him, (as should you and your spouse) but a polygamist relationship with Christ is over the top, even for you!
