Opening Remarks to the N.A.R.A.L. "Champions of Choice" Lunch
The Yale Club, Thursday, April 5th, 2001

Thank you very much for inviting me to say a few words of welcome. This event shows that people of different political parties and different political thinking can unite in support of choice. In doing so, we are upholding a distinguished tradition that began in our city starting with the work of Margaret Sanger and the movement for reproductive freedom that began in the early decades of the 20th century.
As a Republican who supports a woman's right to choose, it is particularly an honor to be here. And I would like to explain, just for one moment, why I believe being in favor of choice is consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. In fact, it might be more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. Because the Republican Party stands for the idea that you have to restore more freedom of choice, more opportunity, more opportunity for people to make their own choices rather than the government dictating those choices. Republicans stand for lower taxation because we believe that people can make better choices with their money than the government will make for them, and that ultimately frees the economy and produces more political freedom. We believe that, yes, government is important, but that the private sector is actually more important in solving our problems.
So it is consistent with that philosophy to believe that in the most personal and difficult choices that a woman has to make with regard to a pregnancy, those choices should be made based on that person's conscience and that person's way of thinking and feeling. The government shouldn't dictate that choice by making it a crime or making it illegal.
I think that's actually a much more consistent position. Many Republicans support that position, but you don't hear that as often. For example, in a recent poll by American Viewpoint, 65 percent of Republicans supported changing the plank in the Republican platform that calls for a constitutional ban on abortion. That's 6.5 out of every 10 Republicans. And over 80 percent of Republicans believe that the decision with regard to an abortion should be made by a woman, her doctor, and her family rather than dictated by the government.

In any case, I just wanted you to know that many of my fellow Republicans stand with you on this issue. So I thank you, I thank NARAL for taking the lead in establishing freedom of choice for all of us, and as the Mayor of New York City, I thank you for being here in New York City.
I do agree with you.
If Giuliani wins the nomination, my objective will be to ensure that neither major-party candidate receives a majority of the vote. A third-party vote will be the clear and obvious rational way to try to promote that outcome.
...and I'll do everything I can to sink both Rudy and Hillary. (that should be your goal also)
It might be the demise of the Republican Party but the conservative movement will continue.

And I have no doubt that I’m NOT the only one.
Except I never believed the 65% figure. Rudy is not conservative, nor is he a Republican.
Do we really want abortion mentioned in the Constitution?
Roe v. Wade is a horrible decision and should be overturned because it has put into the Constitution an alleged right to abortion. Those who framed the Amendments that abortion rights are supposedly based on would have been shocked to have know how their words were twisted around in such a way by future members of the Supreme Court.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion will return to being a decided by each individual state, as the Tenth Amendment intends any issue to be decided when the Constitution is silent on that issue.
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved for the States respectively, or to the people."
An "Abortion Prohibition Amendment" has zero chance, absolutely zero chance, of passing in the America of 2007. The moral climate of America will simply not support it. This is no longer Grandpa's America.
If however, the Amendment Fairy went POOF and put the "Abortion Prohibition Amendment" into the Constitution today, the moral and political climate of America is such that the "Repeal of Abortion Prohibition Amendment" would pass in record time.
The next step would be that the pro-abortion forces would then fight to put an "Abortion Rights Amendment" into the Constitution and have abortion truly be a Constitutional right.
That would be the worst outcome of all.
If I were a politician trying to get votes in a liberal state, I would tell the pro-abortion forces that I was against an "Abortion Prohibition Amendment".
Translation: "I do not want to push such an Amendment because it has a snowball's chance in Hell of ever passing but I will appoint Supreme Court Justices that respect the Tenth Amendment and will overturn Roe v. Wade."
Once elected, I would appoint Supreme Court Justices that respect what the Constitution actually says and would overturn Roe v. Wade.
That would be the best outcome politically possible in the moral climate of America today and will remain so until the moral climate of America changes.
Does anyone know if all the Rudybots who got booted this last weekend are permanently banned or just taking a little vacation?
I’d hate to think they were permamently banned over this one issue eventhough, some were so hardcore Rudy, they might not want to come back.
Number one...it was a poll. Who knows HOW it was conducted. Number two...the poll was of GOP'ers not all Americans. Number three...dream on about that 65% increasing.
The nation was 50/50 liberal/conservative.
Maybe the voting booth reflected that..but that doesn't make it so.
Since April 2001 this nation has moved to the right.
So...we moved to starboard...but we threw the baby overboard? Don't think so.......
