Yes, Ishmael is a character in Moby Dick and Fennimore Cooper. But I don’t think either character resembles the role of violence and vengeance that the shooter evidently admired.
The Massachusetts Puritans often took Old Testament names. But I don’t see that appealing to a Korean who saw himself as an outsider.
Thus, the rage against “debauchery.”
I don’t know. I’d “Ask the Imam,” but he’s busy right now, apparently.
Check the link in #7, Cicero. It is a violent game and the character, Ismail, bears an axe. The game is an amalgam of religious figures including Baal and Diablo.
“Ismail” is the Arabic form for “Ishmael,” one of the two sons of Abraham. In the Bible, Isaac is the chosen son and Ishmael is an outcast who will be the ancestor of the Arab wanderers.
Does the bible say they will be “wanderers?” do you have the verse. thanks
Yes, that may have been literal, since many of the ancient idolatrous religions of the Middle East included temple prostitutes as well as the literal sacrifice of first-born sons.
I used red caps because reportedly the killer wrote in red—my guess is, in caps—and if writing on one’s own arm, a bump or a bend could make a K look like an X.
I saw him drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's...
...His hair was perfect.
Sorry, I have to leave for dinner, so I have to do this quickly. Ishmael, the son of Abraham’s slave Hagar, is mentioned in Genesis 16 and again in Genesis 21. I don’t immediately see “wanderer,” although I believe that is traditional.
But see 16:12: “He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”
which is apparently based on his acceptance of the Jewish tradition that the Arabs are descendants of Ishmael the outcast and wanderer. Mohammed took the story and retold it to put Ismael in the role of chosen son

See posts 220 and 271 (and probably others) for rather astonishing photo of Cho and/or Cho lookalike with near-identical full name......at one site photo apparently taken in Indonesia shows a happy smiling “Cho” of similar age and visage.
thanks!
Huh, I was going to post that Ismail Ax may have been his Dungeons & Dragons or PC adventure/fantasy-gamer nom-de-geek.

Very well could have been.
Hmmm.... bump
I believe in an islamic connection.
Dr. Ismail Ak rather than Ismail Ax. Interesting take. Thanks for posting that... again let me bump.
That was interesting.
and this blog has some interesting takes:

But the killer also apparently signed his note this way (Ismail Ax). And that was probably more clearly an “x.” Of course, I haven’t seen it.
