I’m a bit lost by this line of thinking. The kid moved here at age 7 or 8 and is now 23. He likely spoke better English than most Americans and is more American than Korean. This is about a nut job, end of story.

I would not assume that any thinking went into that comment at all. You are right, this guy just snapped. Where he was born had nothing to do with it.
I do not buy the “just snapped” theory. This was planned well ahead of time.
