Va. Tech Gunman Named

By Michael Shear and Debbi Wilgoren Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, April 17, 2007; 9:36 AM

Virginia Tech officials today identified the Virginia Tech student who killed 32 people and then himself on the Blacksburg campus yesterday as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui of Centreville.

Cho was a South Korean native who had immigrated to this country, the university announced on its Web site this morning. He was a senior majoring in English, and lived in a dorm on campus, officials said.

“I was planning on buying my first gun this summer, a Glock 9-mm most likely. Yikes! I hope they don’t make it next to impossible for citizens like me to arm themselves.
And where and when did he learn to shoot so accurately in the month since he bought the gun?”

1. I’d buy that gun today if I were you.

2. Same question I have, where did he learn to shoot like this, and I don’t buy he learned ‘in a month’ based on my own experience learning the art of handgunning accurately.

Unless this guy spent countless hours on a range, or just plinking, to the tune of hundreds of rounds fired, I don’t see it as ‘learned in the last month’.

Ever looked in a college student’s backpack? :) Stuff lives in those things (sometimes, literally!) for months. Whenever I’d clean mine out at the end of a semester, I’d find loose bits of paper and whatnot from very early in the term, in all the various pockets.

Thanks for confirming - I spent time recently on a business trip in South Korea.

Lots of locations where they have roads and bridges designed and wired to be quickly blown in the event of North coming across....

Many South Koreans were not all that strong on supporting a strong military stance against NK..??

A news report today says that in 1927 45 children were killed and 58 others wounded in Bath, Michigan when a disgruntled member of the school board dynamited their school.

That forum was very small. A link to the thread started floating around big forums like this last night and crashed their server.

Who the hell carries around purchase receipts in a backpack?
___________

Jeez, how about a person who bought the weapon while carrying his backpack? I know more than a few people for whom their backpacks are every day accessories.

Some might be a tad quick to see coverup on this point.

“Nothing prepares you for the ‘real thing’.”
________

No argument from me on that score.

“The one thing I might add to your comments is that LEO’s are often themselves under fire, or in imminent danger, when they use their weapons.”

I wasn’t belittling LEO’s in such situations, to be clear. Of course you are correct.

“Not so with Cho. He had no natural predators in his situation, no having to bob and weave while carrying out his shootings. Just a thought.”

Same adreniline rush, same confusion, same sense of time speeding up or slowing down, as is the case in any emergency, no matter if you are the cause of it or just ‘caught in the moment’.

And we don’t know yet what happened inside those halls and classrooms for sure yet.

We’ll learn more as the day progresses.

He was highly trained

There have been a variety of mass shootings accomplished solely with handguns with significant casualties by shooters with limited training.

Where did he learn to shoot this well? Handgunning isn’t a ‘natural act’ and its pretty clear he was a good shot. I doubt he acquired this level of skill in a couple of weeks.

I just got to work and caught a glimpse of the news in the cafeteria. Some kid talking about how Shooter just walked up to his victims and shot them point blank in the head, one by one. Not much skill required to do that, just a very compliant herd.

Dang! I guess Don Imus’ body count is running up. This guy apparently did not like being called a nappy-hair Cho.

I carry around tons of reciepts, shoved into backpacks, purses, etc.

There seems to be such a desire to have this be terrorism or something other than a crazy guy upset his girl was with another guy.

Reminds me a little of the global warming folks just salivating over the prospect of a 20’ ocean rise.

Maybe it’s more than a lone gunman, but maybe not.

A few hundred rounds of practice and you could get amazing deadly against unarmed opponents.
