Va. Tech Gunman Named

By Michael Shear and Debbi Wilgoren Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, April 17, 2007; 9:36 AM

Virginia Tech officials today identified the Virginia Tech student who killed 32 people and then himself on the Blacksburg campus yesterday as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui of Centreville.

Cho was a South Korean native who had immigrated to this country, the university announced on its Web site this morning. He was a senior majoring in English, and lived in a dorm on campus, officials said.

Parents live here, too, Laz. He’s the child of immigrants.

Not according to the gun shop owner, who saw his paperwork. He correctly identified the kid's name as 'Cho' (alibet transposing the first and last names -- easy with such a foreign nomenclature) well before this morning.

""Well, I'm screwed. They found a receipt in the gunman's pocket indicating that he bought the gun from me in March. ATF is at my shop right now. See you later, I'm on my way to the shop right now."

[...]"Call BS all you like, but I just spent the last several hours with 3 ATF agents. I saw the shooter's picture. I know his name and home address. I also know that he used a Glock 19 and a Walther P-22. The serial number was ground off the Glock. Why would he do that and still keep the receipt in his pocket from when he bought the gun? ATF told me that they are going to keep this low-key and not report this to the tv news. However, they cautioned that it will leak out eventually, and that I should be ready to deal with CNN, FOX, etc. My 32 camera surveillance system recorded the event 35 days ago. This is a digital system that only keeps the video for 35 days. We got lucky. By the way, the paperwork for Mr. Cho was perfect, thank God."

"[...]Mr. Cho had proof of Virginia residency, checkbook (for a second ID), and his green card(which is, of course, not green). That is all he needed to purchase a handgun."

Don’t you see the media set-up here?

It’s time to ban the NRA, shooting ranges and guns in general again.

The man who, on that other forum, claimed to be the seller to this person, was telling the truth.

Lotta folks were calling b.s. on that guy (I had my doubts as well)... But he was right on - referred to Mr. Cho...

Speculation - most South Korean males must undergo military training due to the ongoing situation with North Korea... could be Cho was X - South Korean military?

Misspelled words and bad grammar are not the result
of a bad education and not because the person
is a dope.
It happens because of a yet to be name syndrome
that results from being in a hurry to be the first
to post something on Free Republic. Being first
to post something on FR has a certain honor about it
that is only understood by Freepers.
We should be kind to these types and especially
kind to newbies who are not used to the rush that
comes with being “The First Poster”.

(chuckle)

Nothing prepares you for the ‘real thing’. I’ll guess you know this. Thats why LEO’s accuracy is well below fifty percent in any shooting.

Way below fifty percent. And rarely ‘fatal’.

This guy, however...well, the butchers bill speaks to his skill with a semi auto handgun.

So we’re eventually going to see a 32-camera video of the perp buying the guns... That’s gonna be chilling...

Just because the nutjob used those recently purchased guns doesn’t mean he never shot a gun before. For all we know he has been shooting for years.

My husband has been taking our 9 and 13 year olds to a local range to teach them gun safety and how to handle a gun.

I heard on the radio this morning, an EMT who said "...this guy was BRUTAL. There were no fewer than three shots placed into each victim."

He only bought the pistols in March. It took him 35 days to use them.

Wikipedia :

Korea, South
South Korea has mandatory military service of 24 to 27 months.[8] There are no alternatives for conscientious objectors[9] except imprisonment.

There are many reported instances of American citizens of Korean descent being forced to serve in the South Korean military. Under South Korean law, one is considered a citizen if one’s name is entered into the Korean Family Census Register, or hojuk. At least two of these cases involved individuals whose names had been recorded on the Korean Family Census Register, without their knowledge. [11].

Last night I yelled at the TV and turned it off after Greta Van Spitoon said “worste school shooting ever” for the 300th time. Geraldo was pissing me off too. Also, the fact that Geraldo, Spitoon, and that other fruitcake were only 100 yards away from each other and kept cutting back and forth to have a conversation was annoying. Why couldn’t they all be in the same room. Why have one on the drillfield, one in Burrus Hall and one at the Hotel. I kept waiting for them to get a response from Howard K Stern.

I think the “receipt in the backback” angle is a little too cute.

Who the hell carries around purchase receipts in a backpack?

Crazy people. And crazy people kill other people, too. Maybe I just answered my own question.

Still . . .

Where did he learn to shoot this well? Handgunning isn’t a ‘natural act’ and its pretty clear he was a good shot. I doubt he acquired this level of skill in a couple of weeks.

South Korea has compulsory military service. By that age, he will have served in the South Korean military for a year or two.

So what everyone’s been touting as accuracy may, in fact, be nothing more than ruthlessness...
