U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that radio host Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team were "disgusting" and she was pleased he was fired.
Imus called the women players "nappy-headed hos" -- racist, sexist remarks that resulted in a barrage of protests and ultimately in the outspoken host losing his CBS Radio show, which was also televised.
"I'm very glad that there was, in fact, a consequence. I think that this kind of coarse language doesn't belong anywhere in reasonable dialogue between reasonable people," Rice said in an interview with syndicated radio show host Michael Medved.
Rice, the first black female U.S. Secretary of State and a former college professor, said the young women Imus targeted were fine athletes trying their best.
"It gets ruined by this disgusting -- and I'll use the word 'disgusting' -- comment which doesn't belong in any polite company and certainly doesn't belong on any radio station that I would listen to," she added.
Asked how she handled racist, sexist comments directed her way, Rice laughed and replied: "I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself. And I really don't care because, you know, I'm a mature woman

Exactly. Forget racism. It's bad manners.
Take care of manners, and you can't (legitimately) be accused of any "isms."
Proof positive that Rice is a big government totalitarian. What a surprise.
Yep: )
I disagree, Imus was particularly nasty, really mean on her. I think he called her evey name there is but ‘nappy haired ho’. After years of it I am sure she got very tired of him. I am going to give her a ‘bye’ on this one.
ummm...I'd ask you to defend this...you know what? I will. Go ahead, convince me.
This will be fun.
This is MSM tabloid stuff. Hardly the concerns of a Secretary of State of the United States. Was she hoping to get on Nancy Grace? Maybe an invite to Sharptons show or a Jackson march?
Maybe she was asked her opinion and gave it.
Maybe she was asked her opinion and gave it.
I never listened to Imus and so I cannot opine about his comments regarding Condi.
I'll give this story a shot:
When THEY tell advertisers we won't buy their products if they continue to sponsor some jerk, and THEY protest and bully a company into firing someone because of something he's said on the air, it's Totalitarian Censorship.
When WE tell advertisers we won't buy their products if they continue to sponsor some jerk, and WE protest and bully a company into firing someone because of something he's said on the air, it's Using the Power of the Pocketbook and Victimized Family Values Voter and FReepers Fighting Back.
Understand?
A government official in favor of restriction of free speech? Now there’s a shocker.
Now you know.
It would have been nice if Condi had stated this line to the press in criticism of those who stated in public that they thought President Bush might be assassinated.
Not to mention that a whole bunch of nappy headed homies say worse than what Imus said regularly in widely broadcast Rap music. Then there are the statements of Louis Farakhan widely broadcast on radio about white people. I don't think the Sec State has any business censoring anyone. Is she changing her mind about a presidential run?
I dislike censorship of this kind. Next thing you know the libs will try to shut off Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
as racist as refering to Aunt Jamami
Is she glad that Rosie thinks Bush created 911?
Why only fire IMUS for outrageous statements?
He was a major player in the coarsening of our culture, she is an elegant lady that gave her two cents when asked, her statement is what we would have expected in our better times, I agree with her.
A Liberal would say: "I think that this kind of coarse language doesn't belong anywhere in reasonable dialogue between reasonable people, AND THEY MUST BE FIRED!"
The real story in all of this is the HUGE double-standard tha exists in this country. Why anyone would have to genuflect at the altar of Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson as they are somehow the moral authority on these issues baffles the mind. Sharpton and Jackson are race hustlers of the worst kind... and two of the biggest racists in the country. Did Sharpton apologize over Tywanna Brawley? Did Jackson apologize over “Hymie-town?” Hate is actually tolerated and encouraged for some. SICKENING!
Your argument is as invisible as your hand.
