Pet food contaminated with an industrial chemical may have sickened or killed 39,000 cats and dogs nationwide, based on an extrapolation from data released Monday by one of the nation's largest chains of veterinary hospitals.
Banfield, The Pet Hospital, said an analysis of its database, compiled from records collected by its more than 615 veterinary hospitals, suggests that three out of every 10,000 cats and dogs that ate the pet food contaminated with melamine developed kidney failure. There are an estimated 60 million dogs and 70 million cats in the United States, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The hospital chain saw 1 million dogs and cats during the three months when the more than 100 brands of now-recalled contaminated pet food were sold. It saw 284 extra cases of kidney failure among cats during that period, or a roughly 30 percent increase, when compared with background rates.
"It has meaning, when you see a peak like that. We see so many pets here, and it coincided with the recall period," said veterinarian Hugh Lewis, who oversees the mining of Banfield's database to do clinical studies. The chain continues to share its data with the Food and Drug Administration.

It’s run by a vet and they have recipes already made up. They cost $20 each BUT wait, there is a space to enter a promotional code which will zero out the $20 charge. The promotional code is Wal-Mart. No kidding. I talked to the rep at balanceit and yes, Wal-Mart is picking up the tab. Unbelievable.
Here are a few tips that I figured out:
1. Only do one recipe at a time. If you do more than one the promotional code will only zero out one so you’ll be left looking at a bill for the other/s.
2. You can do this over & over; just remember, one at a time.
3. They sell a powdered supplement to add to the food. I ordered the one for cats. I refuse to use the one for dogs. The one for dogs has a substance in it that I don’t feel is safe; it’s called Menadione. They’ll tell you it’s “Vitamin K” but it’s not. Menadione is a precurser to Vitamin K and is banned for use in human supplements in the U.S. There are questions about toxicity and there's no proof that it’s needed for dogs. I called the company about this and she took all the info. She said if more people would call that would help to get it removed.
There you go!
Fox Reports Real Numbers Ping!
Thank you, this is unreal!!
You might want to hold off on the salt shaker.
See http://www.petconnection.com/recall/ They are keeping track of the number of owner reported deaths. These are just the ones that have reported it to this site. How many don’t even know to report it there? The number is getting larger every day and is VERY alarming.
I don’t for a minute think “global warming”. I think the pet food industry is finally caught.
My cocker spaniel, Lucy, is having some problems with her pregnancy. She was supposed to have them 4 or 5 days ago. We are taking her to the vet tomorrow.
(I heard that its possible for dogs to get pregnant and then a few days later get impregnated by another dog and have all the puppys at the date the later dog got to her but idk. If they come out like that damn hound Scooby down the street I’ll ......)
I forgot to say, I wonder if the pet food could have contributed.
Wow!
I venture to say that that’s the tip of the iceberg...!
TANKS,Kel,,,Great Catch,,,Keeps Gitin’ Deeper...
That adds up to a lot of grief.
Boycott Chinese made products.
I haven’t seen anyone mention this, but I consider this a form of terrorism. There should be people seriously punished for this.
Not dog food related...but
One of my girls ended up in the Vets office today .
Turned into a Bumpus dog and chowed down on the Easter Turkey bones and all.
my friend, who lives in the country on 35 acres, frequently receives dumped animals, which her children love to feed. They normally feed scraps and some cheap dry food, but it just so happened that her animal-loving 18-yr-old recently decided to treat the dozen or so cats to canned food. All the cats died within a week, along with two of their three dogs. They have one dog left. A vet, who has cattle on her property, took a look at one of the dead dogs and said his gums were white, indicating poisoning.
I hope she is OK - sleepy on L-tryptofan, but OK :~)
******* Basha of Beautiful Skies, sired by ******* Red Bear the Hunter went to her reward peacefully while in my arms.
She was a good friend, a faithful companion, and a beloved family member for 18 years. I was the first person to touch her in this world. I was also the last person to touch her in this world.
This is as it should be.
She know resides with the Father of All Things in a place I know is endless fields of sweet clover, clear skies, fresh water, and lots and lots of slow, dumb rabbits.
She may have been born a dog, but she died a lady.
I shall miss her terribly.
