“You people can go down wailing about it or you can look to accomodate and help build concepts of freedom justice and independence to a people group who have known none of that their whole lives.”

You are like soooooooooooooooooooooo totally full of crap it isn’t even funny (anymore).
In case you haven’t noticed, our government is complicit in setting up this duality of pitting legit businesses against those scumbags who hire illegals. Due to GWB, Gonzales, Chertoff and gang “selective law enforcement” policies...if you TRY to abide by the law you get hammered.

Their lips are firmly attached to the lobbyists asses for big business, they couldn’t give a rats ass what happens to the small business owner who tries to play by the rules.

"Union thug."

"Current Mohawk employee Christina Martinez claims HR officials and her direct supervisor told her she would be fired if she enquired about workers’ legal status or read articles about the cases."

HR using Union thug tactics. Ought to be criminal.

Hiring ILLEGAL ALIENS is ILLEGAL

No it is not, and you bellowing about it won't cause it to be so. KNOWINGLY hiring illegal aliens is illegal. Simply hiring them when you think they "might" be illegal is not a crime. I did not check the papers of my contractors. I assumed they were illegal because none of them spoke english.

You can pitch your little hissy fits ally you like, but when the law says it is illegal to KNOWINGLY hire illegals, then the burden of the law is to prove that companies knowingly did so. As of yet THERE IS NO INFORMATION SOURCE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC TO DETERMINE THE LEGAL IMMIGRATION STATUS OF A POTENTIAL EMPLOYEE THAT IS FEDERALLY MANDATED OR APPROVED. I hear nimrods on these boards claim that "well, I just did this" or "I just did that" as if that just fixed the problem.

You can claim that business "should" do this and that till you get tired of doing it, and you can just stamp your little feet in rage that they don't and claim they are all selfish, greedy people who care nothing about America, blah blah, blah. Maybe they should. And we should all be sure the hungry are fed and the cows are milked and the ozone layer is replinished and every child's shoelaces are tied. When you set up your kingdom where everyone does what they "should" please let me know so I can observe in wide wonder. For the meantime, we have these things called "laws" about which you seem to be clueless. At this point in time, there is no "law" against hiring someone who presents papers which appear to be legitimate.

What you and your shriveled sour band of haters want to do is to prosecute for intent. This is the same stupid reasoning that brought us "hate crimes," attempting to make intent a crime, rather than actions.

You want to make it illegal to hire illegals? Fine. Give businesses an OFFICIAL, RECOGNIZED and FEDERALLY ACKNOWLEDGED number to call. If you say one exists now, you are a liar, plain and simple.

The truth sucks sometimes. Deal with it.

Have you even been following this case at all?

As for Mohawk not being at fault because they hired through a 3rd party, please read the brief, available by clicking this link http://www.usdoj.gov/osg/briefs/2005/3mer/1ami/2005-0465.mer.ami.html . Read #2 under “Statement”. It states that Mohawk is being sued because they conspired with said 3rd party to hire illegal immigrants and Mohawk employees provided false social security numbers and documentation for the illegal immigrants when needed.

You both are so far off base with this... Do you live in this region? Do you work for this company? Do you do ANYTHING except sit on the internet all day fighting about issues that you haven’t researched?

Let’s talk about the suppressed wage issue for a second. Mohawk Industries is a multi-national corporation. It is, in fact, the largest floor covering manufacturer. Their corporate headquarters are in GA. A suppressed wage at the corporate level will affect wages throughout the entire country.

Hmmm... now let’s move to the hiring of illegal immigrants. I do agree with DreamsofPolycarp that this is pretty hard to police without giving up all kinds of freedoms and being reduced to a police state. There are things that can be done. Recently, a Maryland business man was sentenced to 5 months in jail, 5 months home detention, and 3 years probation for employing several illegal immigrants. He also has to repay a $700K fine, plus all of the back taxes he should have been paying for these employees. If you make it severely uncomfortable for the employers, then they won’t hire illegal immigrants. If there are no jobs, they will stop flooding in. (Maybe not all at once, but it will happen.)

Last but not least, MOHAWK EMPLOYEES are accused of providing these illegal immigrants with fake Social Security cards and documentation. There’s just nothing anyone can say that would excuse that.
