Im a retired Navy Chief Radioman 1973-1994 and the son of a Three War Marine. My father enlisted in 1940 in the Marine Corps, stationed in Iceland 1941, Guadalcanal in 1943, Okanawa, China in 1944 during which he received a Bronze star w/combat V and Purple Heart, Korea 1950-1953 awarded second Purple Heart when he stepped on the side of a landmine in 1953 was in traction for 6 months then on cruches for 6months then I was born 3 months later in Sept 1955. he was in Vietnam in 58-59 and again in 64-65 retired in 1966 M/GySgt Wilfred Paul Zeimet. Old School Tanker I dont have any info on his units which he was assigned. If You Knew of Him please let me know. In Vietnam I think he was a Batallion Operations Chief

Why do you think he is here? He asked us for help and if we can we will, that is what being a Freeper is all about.

Welcome to Free Republic!
Did your father retain his DD 214? It would have a list of his awards, plus his last stattion where he was discharged, as well as where his main records were archived.
I would also suggest contacting the American Legion, which retains a vast library of combat units past and present. They’re on the Web at www.legion.org.

Link below is the 1st Marine Division Association. When your Dad was at Guadalcanal he may have been in the 1st Marine Division or the 2nd Marine Division. In Korea chances are he was in the 1st Marine Division. There are still guys in the association from WWII and quite a few from Korea:

Hey Chief...
I believe that the only Marine units that fought on both Oki and Guadalcanal were the 1st Mardiv (1st, 5th, and 7th Marines). It’s not much, and I may be wrong, but it’s a place to start.

I know a lot of Marine jokes and how to tactfully explain the punch line to them.
