I know it is a foreign concept to liberal clowns like this guy, but the salute by President Reagan, I think, was intended as a sign of RESPECT to the uniform and the military.

What's a "progressive"?

A Socialist who hasn't got the guts to admit he's a Socialist.

Actually, the Queen is head of state and the Governor General is the CinC. Both are saluted, but they only return the salute if they are wearing a military uniform.

I consider the salute to be a sign of respect...which is why I do it whenever something (like a song) makes me damn proud to be an American.

I saluted when I heard Toby Kieth's "American Soldier", I saluted when I heard "Have You Forgotten", and I've saluted to dozens of patriotic songs that struck the patriotic choir in me. It's meant to be a sign of respect towards the song and the person who sings it.

You know, it always puzzles me how people make big deals out of little things. Sure, the meaning behind the act of saluting is no trivial matter, but it's hardly something worth starting this kind of debate over.

"I would love to see Ronald Reagan salute anything one more time. I miss him."

I never actually saw him on TV or heard him speak before he died, but what I've read about him makes me willing to give just about anything to get the chance to shake his hand. He was truly our greatest President, and I've spent a lot of days wishing I had gotten the chance to be alive while he was President.

The internet makes available to us so much information.

Ronald Reagan is truly a man worth studying.

May I recommend a book to you that I found enlightening about him?

It's God and Ronald Reagan-A Spiritual Life--by Paul Kengor.

Having lived through the horrible Carter years, Ronald Reagan was like someone breathing new life into someone who was dying.

Looking back over those years, with Mr. Kengor's well- documented analysis, one sees what drove President Reagan, and his contagious optimism.

He was good person, and that decency always came out. He was treated badly by the press and the Democrats, much like they treat President Bush today.

One thing we never expected--was the end of the Cold War without a shot fired. We all expected that one side or the other would prevail, with a nuclear exchange more than a remote possibility.

His determination to fight Communism resulted in a changed world. Pope John Paul and Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reaga- God used them do it. What was a dream became a reality, and freedom was ushered in for hundreds of millions of people.

When President Reagan passed away in 2004, the heartfelt outpouring of love was evident all along the routes of his funeral procession, both in DC and California.

We had been given a gift. History will be very kind to him.

"commie Dave"

Zweifel's columns write themselves. I get the feeling his editor says "hey Dave write a column about the president", and Zweifel says to himself "how can I criticize Bush over some piddling, trifling matter". He's a joke, but then so are Joel McNally and the rest of our beloved Badger state lib and commie scribblers.

They are one collective piece of work, aren't they?

'Collective' being the operative word; each has the same agenda in mind and it isn't, "I Love America!"

President Reagan was the first President to return a salute to Military Personnel, to him it was a sign of mutual respect. The key word is respect. He asked Gen Powell if it was OK. I believe the General told him it was just fine and taught the President how to do it properly.

I had my salute returned from the current President Bush. They didn't have to do it but they did. The last three Republican Presidents treated the military decently and with respect. They and the first Ladies, even off camera, were and are genuine decent folks.

That is something the libs will never get. To get respect you must earn and learn how to respect. Respect is not given out like candy.

I might take a look at that one.

Most of the books I have read about him are books like Ann Coulter's Treason, Sean Hannity's two books on America (In God We Trust and Let Freedom Ring), and the book Useful Idiots (can't remember the author). While their focus is on the anti-Americanism of liberals, they all go out of their way to show what kind of man Ronald Reagan was.

there ought to be a regulation that the president could return a salute inasmuch as he is commander in chief and civilian clothes are his uniform

Makes sense to me. Besides, by returning the salute, it gave the marines a "cue" to go ahead and drop their salute. Which also makes sense.

Seems Reagan was just being practical (in addition to honoring his marine guard).

I guess some people are born to be needy. Wills sounds like that. Evidently he is not getting the attention and so comes up with a lame story like this. Wasn't ole willie a joke when trying to salute? You are correct. He was so bad at it and it showed. He was bad at a lot of things...
