Giuliani not fit for the White House: poll (Go Rudy!!)
New York Business ^ | March 21, 2007 | Kira Bindrim

Posted on 03/21/2007 5:04:50 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

A majority of respondents to a Crain's online poll agree with columnist Alair Townsend, who wrote in this week's issue that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani doesn't have the temperament to be an effective president.

Ms. Townsend wrote that, while she had voted for the former mayor three times, she would not be casting a fourth vote for him, criticizing his "stick-in-your-eye" style. Ms. Townsend said that his strong personality would not translate well when it comes to dealing with international leaders and Congress.

About 70% of the 784 respondents to the Crain's poll agree that Mr. Giuliani's argumentative temperament makes him a poor candidate for the White House.

"Rudy does not have the ability to work with others. It is his way or no way," wrote poll respondent Elaine Walsh. "The decisions he made as mayor were not in the best interests of New York City and on Sept. 10, 2001, his days were numbered and he was leaving with a poor record."

Another respondent worries that Mr. Giuliani's aggressive demeanor would do little to bring about much-needed change in Washington.

"If there's one thing we should have learned from the current administration, it's the tragic risks we face when our leaders fail to listen to divergent views," wrote Bill Melville, in survey comments. "For the sake of the nation, we need to get as far from the 'my way or the highway' thinking we're now mired in as possible. Unfortunately, Rudy won't get us there."

About 30% of respondents say that Mr. Giuliani's style would be well-suited for the White House.

"Apparently the ultra liberals are running this poll and feel that Mayor Giuliani is not the man," wrote poll respondent Joseph DiMauro. "I feel differently because he knows how to make decisions in a very hard world filled with tough people."

The results come after a poll earlier this month showed a majority of respondents were concerned about comments made by Mr. Giuliani's son. Fifty-three percent of respondents to that poll said the statements, which revealed an estranged father-son relationship, would renew concerns about Mr. Giuliani's personal life and could damage his presidential ambitions.

God forbid we should ever have a Republican in the White House who actually fights back at the liberal media.

....McCain had none of those detractions, a history of really serving (in the Hanoi Hilton), and a history of fairly Conservative voting, and he was beaten by a right wing flank....

"Fairly" doesn't cut it. McCain makes my skin crawl.

Do you think Guiliani will win conservative voters over from Thompson?

Do you think it will suit Thompson to run? To give us his greatness? Or will something else catch his eye?

I do not bemoan Rudy fleeing, I bemoan him ordering everyone stay behind, while he saved his own ass.

He ordered everyone to stay ? Funny thats the first time I ever heard that.

While I agree with all the attributes listed in this article and admire his toughness, I thought conservative issues were mainly right to life, right to bear arms and the illegal immigration problems. If so, how will Rudy survive the primaries? I probably could vote for him, but throw in all the personal issues and it seems insurmountable.

I believe conservative issues are national security, small government and low taxes. Having educational choice and welfare reform are nice too. By the way, Rudy hasn't asked for a repeal of the right to bear arms and he wants a electronic fence and justices that can overturn Roe.

I watched live on TV as Rudy ran through the street, being guided by another guy as he fled the command center, leaving all the other department heads in it. They were all subsequently killed when the towers collapsed.

Rudy "fled" from WTC #7. No one died in that building.

So I think you must have DREAMED you were watching that on TV.

The results of an "on-line poll." How is this poll any more valid than the daily poll on Free Republic?

He is nto fit to be president, he is far to liberal.

How's life there in the echo-chamber, Hydro?

Conservatives comment on Rudy Giuliani:

“It is the greatness of the United States that daunting challenges inevitably summon to the fore leaders with the steel to rise to the occasion and the grasp to raise us up with them. Leaders whose confidence and command cut through the noise and the naysayers. Leaders who stir us not only to the urgency of action but to the achievability of victory through America’s exceptional gifts. Rudy Giuliani is such a leader. In our perilous times, his is the unique combination of vision, guts, and perseverance that we need in the Oval Office. That’s why I hope we have the good sense to make him the next president of the United States.” -- Andrew McCarthy (“Giuliani for President: Leadership Inspires Early Endorsement;” NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE)

“Further, [the] argument that Rudy couldn’t survive without the support of the GOP base is very true. As such, it’s a good thing that Rudy has been able to attain the support of that very base. Rudy generally garners between 85% and 90% of Republicans in a hypothetical matchup against a standard blue-state Democrat like Hillary Clinton. These numbers are just ever-so-slightly shy of Bush’s 90-plus percent GOP support against Kerry in 2004. And while it’s true that Rudy’s support among independents and Democrats will fluctuate, it’s probably also true that Rudy will at least win independents in the general election, which the president couldn’t do two years ago. Given those considerations, it’s hard to see how Rudy can be viewed as anything other than supremely electable. -- race42008.com

"Christian conservatives make up the core of the school-choice movement in the state. If they come to the conclusion that Mr. Giuliani is on their side and has the leadership qualities to achieve lasting and meaningful change, he may prove a surprisingly strong contender." -- Brendan Miniter ("Culture Warrior: Don't write-off Giuliani's appeal to social conservatives;" OPINION JOURNAL, Feb. 13, 2007)

"On every major issue, [Giuliani] is a solidly conservative and extraordinarily adept executive..." -- Michael Reagan ("The GOP Should Dump It's Litmus Test," FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE, Feb. 16, 2007)

“I've known (Rudy Giuliani) for 26 years and we've talked about this many times," Olson said. "He feels very strongly that people like Justice Scalia, Chief Justice Roberts, Sam Alito, Clarence Thomas, are the type of people that he would put on the court…I'm quite convinced that this is a genuine viewpoint that he has." – Ted Olson, Solicitor General of the United States

"Giuliani is perfectly suited to lead today’s sunbelt center-right GOP due to his belief in low taxes, fiscal responsibility, market-based government reform, traditional marriage, conservative judges, securing the borders, and, last but certainly not least, the destruction of the terrorist threat against America. Only Rudy can package all of this conservatism in a manner that appeals to large numbers of swing voters while still maintaining solid levels of support among the Republican base." -- "The Conservative Case for Rudy Giuliani in 2008"

"I've voted against Rudy Giuliani, and I've voted for him. Voting for him is better; it's what I hope conservatives, Republicans and Americans will do in 2008." -- Richard Brookheiser ("Why Rudy's Right: What Makes Giuliani the Best Choice for America in '08," NEW YORK POST, Dec. 10, 2006)

"...When you talk about issues related to fiscal conservatism, which are important to Rudy, I don't know anybody in the public arena who has cut taxes 23 times as Rudy did when he was mayor of New York; who has shrunk the size of government, which he did when he was mayor of New York; reduced the welfare rolls by over 50 percent, which he did when he was mayor of New York. And that's not going into reducing crime by 65% and many other things that he did while mayor in a situation that, before he became mayor, was widely regarded as the second toughest job in American politics, and was widely regarded as an ungovernable situation." -- Bill Simon, GOP candidate for California governor in 2002.

“By the time Giuliani challenged Dinkins for a second time, in 1993 (his first try had failed), the former prosecutor had fashioned a philosophy of local government based on two core conservative principles vastly at odds with New York’s political culture: that government should be accountable for delivering basic services well, and that ordinary citizens should be personally responsible for their actions and their destiny and not expect government to take care of them." -- Steven Malanga ("Yes, Rudy Giuliani is a Conservative," CITY JOURNAL)

“[Giuliani] is positively Reaganite on taxes, spending, public order, quality of life, welfare reform, school choice, racial preferences, privatization, shrinking bureaucracy, Americanization of immigrants, fatherhood, moving foster kids into adoptive families, pulverizing Islamo-fascism, and maintaining peace through strength.” – DeRoy Murdock, (“Mean Mr. Giuliani’ Would Bring Toughness to Washington,” HUMAN EVENTS)

"Rudy Giuliani is the conservative in the race." -- Former Cong. Jim Nussle, pro-life fiscal conservative and one of the architects of the 1994 Republican Revolution

"He is America's most successful conservative currently in office," columnist George Will wrote in 19989. "He understands that culture, more than politics, determines a community's success, and he has devised policies to drive cultural change in a conservative direction."

“SayNoToRudy.Org’s online retreat also impresses. As the Ohio-based website’s self-described, social-conservative organizers stated November 5: ‘We sought to do everything legally possible to prevent [Giuliani] from becoming the Republican presidential nominee. Unexpectedly, as we began to see more and more of who Mr. Giuliani really is, we found that Mr. Giuliani is truly a committed Republican and an accomplished conservative on many issues. Therefore, the creators of this organization, with much humility and apology, beyond all probability, hereby announce that we are willing to endorse Mr. Giuliani for the Presidency in 2008.’” -- Right Rudy, race42008.com

Tough enough to take on the bad guys
Rudy tossed Yasir Arafat out of a city-sponsored celebrations saying, "I would rather not have someone who has been implicated in the murders of Americans there, if I have the discretion not to have him there. My only regret is that I wasn’t able to throw him out myself.” Rudy did the same to Fidel Castro. When a Saudi prince donated millions to 9/11 relief efforts and later suggested that United States policy in the Middle East may have been partially responsible for the attacks, Rudy returned the money.

Unlike the Democrats, who are too nuanced to acknowledge that the “bad guys” in life even exist, Rudy Giuliani knows how to identify a threat to safety and security and pound that threat into submission. Giuliani’s record on crime in NYC is well-documented; if Rudy is able to do to the terrorists what he did to the crime lords of New York City, Americans will once again be able to feel secure in an uncertain world.

MY2 I am using your post, but agreeing with you, so be cool, you know I luv ya :) so here goes.....

I know Jim and a lot of people here want a socon to be our nominee, and if that happens, wonderful, I will work my heart out for him (since there is no her).

But I also know that Jim and a lot of you hate the Dems, as do those of us who at this time are supporting Rudy.

I also, believe, unlike some of you, that Rudy is not going to take away my guns, nor will he do any more or less than any of our nominee's including Reagan regarding abortion.

What I do know is that if and I stress IF, he is our nominee, I believe he will adhere to most of things we believe in, regarding keeping this country safe, keeping taxes and interest rate for home buyers low, and will listen to us when we have a gripe.

While this is not what you want to hear right now, please think of the alternatives.

I was here in 99, although not a poster. I signed up but forgot my screen name, because at that time I was not forum literate, and I am basically not a super poster, as you can see from my history.

What I do know is, while I am a socon, I am also a realist, and I don't believe with my heart, that Rudy will damage us as some believe, no more than "W" has. BTW, I love "W", but he has not got the balls to stand up and fight, and I honestly believe Rudy does. You guys say he doesn't. But I believe he will do what he says. So far he has not changed his beliefs on social issues, but at least I know where he stands.

He is not pandering at this time, which I admire. I was a Romney fan to begin with, but he has flipped and flopped so much, I don't trust him.

Hunter, I think he is a wonderful guy, actually I love him, and I cry when he is legislating for our troops, but there are so many moderates, that he is truly an asterisk, and unless something of a miracle happens he is toast. Which is a sad reality.

To me, it doesn't matter if the Dems nominate Hillary or Osamabama, Rudy will not destroy us as a party, and might even surprise some people here.

While I love Rudy's moxie, I am not campaigning for him yet. I am really a Newt fan at heart, but He doesn't have the moxie either at this time.

I respect everyone's choices here, but I know that Reagan is turning in his grave seeing all this childish fighting over our nominee.

I know for a fact that I and anyone who is supporting Rudy right now, will unify behind our candidate no matter who he is, to defeat communism/socialism, which is the Dem platform we are seeing.

I have never and will not, demean any of our candidates at this time or in the future.

There is too much at stake to do so.

I would hope some of you would see that we are really on the same side, even though at the moment we have our favorites.

There are a lot of influential people within our party who are not reading or posting at FR anymore, due to all the infighting.

I know this for a fact, first hand!!!!

Jim, you have built a wonderful site here, I don't want to see it tumble into obscurity, after so many years due to infighting.

Debate is healthy, but calling people liberals, and baby killers is over the top. That would truly be sad.

It really hurts to be called names, when it is not deserved, because you see a bigger problem, other than social issues.

I am not condemning people for following their values, I am just saying that OUR values will definitely be compromised with a Hillbama presidency, whereas, with Rudy, Thompson,McCain,Newt, etal, we will have some say so.

My final thought is, everyone please be respectful of each other, we are not each other's enemy :)

I am very pained by all this turmoil here, and I think after the primaries, we will survive and be strong.

We will just have to unite at that time.

Can we?

I hope so!

Thanks AZ. It might not be eloquent, but it is from the heart, and had I taken time to edit and rephrase, it would have sounded like a sound bite!

Which I see enough of on all sides these days.

Have a blessed night or may God be with you, depending on your faith ;)
