Speeding drivers in Orange County today may spot a leprechaun dancing on the side of the road but instead of finding his lucky pot of gold, expect to find a hefty speeding ticket.
Deputy Richard Lockman of the Orange County Sheriff's Office has stopped more than 50 drivers who were exceeding the speed limit, which is 45 mph in the area of University Boulevard west of State Road 417. The fastest driver stopped so far was going 72 mph.
"We've given about 1 ticket every minute since 8:00 this morning," said Lockman, who, in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, was dressed in a green leprechaun outfit complete with hat, tight white knickers and a shiny plastic pot of gold.
Lockman held a sign that read "Watch your speed or it will cost you your pot of gold." A laser speeding detector was located above that sign. More than 10 motorcycle deputies were on hand to stop violators. Another operation will take place later this afternoon on East Colonial Drive.
Sheriff's office spokesperson Jim Solomons said the operation is all part of an aggressive driving crackdown.
"We do this sort of thing a lot on holidays to make people are aware they are speeding," he said.
In past years, deputies have dressed as other mythical characters. Lockman said in December 2006, he dressed as a Christmas elf. Speeding violators complained that being stopped by a deputy in costume was entrapment.

Apparently so!
LOL!
This is Wallet Tap...
They're just flattening the leprechauns Americans won't flatten...
"We've given about 1 ticket every minute since 8:00 this morning,"
60 tickets per hour * 8 hours = 480 tickets * $200 = $96,000 , quite a large pot o' gold ... University is a MAJOR road and a wide and safe one ,,, little traffic entering of leaving except major subdivision entrances/exits ....
Whats so absurd is that with radar you NEVER know what vehicle you're actually getting the speed of ... if you have a Ford Taurus (rounded and curvy with a small radar reflection) 1500 feet away and a delivery truck 9000 feet away (over 1.5 miles away and totally out of sight of the radar operator) it is quite literally a toss up as to which vehicles speed you are seeing as the radar reflections at those distances are the same strength and the radar gun will display to the operator the speed of the strongest reflection not the highest speed or closest vehicle.....
If you really want to get technical the cop should be arrested and fined for illegally operating a radio transmitter without a license....
Because, obviously, the leprechaun costume caused people to speed. No, wait, that can't be right.
Lol, it's enough to make you dizzy!!
They'd really be confused by reference to a sporty 1930s hobo as "a bum in knickers."
Highway robbers in festive garb are still robbers.
That is so funny!
Clowns on Parade!
Maybe by next year I can put other heads in the second one and have a real parade going, lol.
LOL! Great.
You've got Hillary looking

And I know for sure you don't object to that, lol!
