Great Britain Fallen hero set for VC honour (Inspirational story of heroism and dedication)

The Sun Online - Sun Says No justice

Our salute

EVERY year around 2,600 people receive honours personally from the Queen.

But yesterday it was the widow of Corporal Bryan Budd who proudly collected his Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in face of the enemy.

The paratrooper died as he charged Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, saving the lives of his comrades. And when Lorena Budd was handed the medal Her Majesty told her: “Always be proud of him”.

The whole nation will be, Ma’am.

Only shame was that he wasn't surrounded by "windrows of dead Taliban, in some areas stacked 4 or 5 deep".

Prayers to his children and wife. It does seem that the family will be there to help with the children.

"What manner of men are these who wear the maroon beret? They are firstly, all volunteers and are then toughened by hard physical training. As a result they have that infectious optimism and that offensive eagerness which comes from physical well being. They have jumped from the air and by doing so have conquered fear. Their duty lies in the van of battle; they are proud of this honour and have never failed in any task. They have the highest standards in all things whether it is skills in battle or smartness in the execution of all peacetime duties. They have shown themselves to be as tenacious and determined in defence as they are courageous in attack. They are in fact, men apart - every man an Emperor."

- Fd Marshall Montgomery of El Alamein

Godspeed Cpl. Budd....

Widow Lorena, 23, received the cherished medal — only the second given in 25 years — during a private 15-minute audience with the Queen

What's with the 15 minute thing? When I'm in charge, I'd like to think that I'd give a lot more time that that for such an important meeting.
