Red Pepper: Hot Stuff For Fighting Fat?

Science Daily — Food scientists in Taiwan are reporting new evidence from laboratory experiments that capsaicin — the natural compound that gives red pepper that spicy hot kick — can reduce the growth of fat cells. The study is scheduled for the March 21 issue of the ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a bi-weekly publication.

In the report, Gow-Chin Yen and Chin-Lin Hsu cite previous research suggesting that obesity can be reduced by preventing immature fat cells (adipocytes) from developing into mature cells.

Past research also linked capsaicin to a decrease in the amount of fat tissue and decreased blood-fat levels. With that knowledge, the researchers tested capsaicin’s effects on pre-adipocytes and adipocytes growing in laboratory cultures.

They found that capsaicin prevented pre-adipocytes from filling with fat and becoming full-fledged fat cells. The effects occurred at levels just slightly greater than those found in the stomach fluid of an individual eating a typical Indian or Thai diet, the researchers noted. Capsaicin worked by providing a biochemical signal that made fat cells undergo apoptosis, a mechanism in which cells self-destruct.

6'0" 225, here. I love Pepper Sauce, I put it on almost everything. Among my favorites: Dave's Famous (Very Hot), Tabasco (Mildly Hot), El Yucateco (Very Hot), Cholula (Mildly Hot). I also love Chili Peppers straight out of the jar as well as Jalapenos. I'm not getting any skinnier, though. I think if I cut back on the Beer and Dr. Pepper, I might.

capsaicin isn't just found in red peppers but all peppers, it is what makes peppers "hot". It is considered good for the heart but I doubt it will cause a person to lose weight or stop gaining weight.

I thought it didn't really matter how many fat cells you had, as each fat cell is capable of stretching almost indefinitely to contain more. Also, I've noticed that I eat more food when I eat really spicy food because of the endorphin rush. I used to eat habanero peppers whole, but my spice tolerance has gone down since I married my non chili head wife.

May I recommend something I ran across a month ago. Delallo's Peppers and Garlic in Olive oil. 3 things that are good for ya and about a medium in heat. Mix it in, stir fry, eat out of the jar with a spoon. Low sodium.
Italian section in the stores.

After about 3 hours after eating hot sauce, I have to run to the can, as Johnny Cash's song "Ring of Fire" plays over and over in my head. I usually take a spray bottle of cold water and a bag of cotton balls to help ease the pain, if you know what I mean!
