As part of its plan to realign the organization, CompUSA has announced a comprehensive strategy to improve the company's financial status. The realignment includes a cash infusion, store closures, major expense reductions and a corporate restructuring. As part of CompUSA's realignment strategy, the company will receive a $440 million cash capital infusion. The financial boost will be designated to improve the company's balance sheet.
"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation. The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiatives that enhance its top performing locations," said Roman Ross, chief executive officer, CompUSA, in the press release.
CompUSA says these moves will allow the company to focus its efforts and ensure a strong presence in its 103 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Bad news for mac users...
No help for me. But there is a Best Buy there now. UGH.
The one near me (located in an upper middle class area) looks like a dump.
The two here in Virginia Beach are very ugly..

CompUSA?? Isn't that a shortened form of InCOMPetentUSA?
Newegg.com has a 1 GB thumb drive for $11.99. Even with the 4.99 shipping it's still a decent deal
I hate going into Best Buy because of the rap music blaring out the stereo section. You can't avoid it: the checkouts are nearby.
Their constant attempts to sell me a crappy magazine subscription at the checkout irritate the heck out of me, too.
I see all but ONE of the CompUSA stores are shutting in Michigan. Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Madison Heights, etc., all are gone except the superstore in Lansing. I used to like to browse, but their stuff always seemed expensive to me.
So very true. I shop for all things to do with computers at newegg now unless it's something I need right away. I sill run out to wal-mart if I need to pick up some disks or something.
Will CompUSA be having sales at the closing locations?
That's the truth. I had a business call me to come setup some networked printers that were replacing older ones. He said he went to bestbuy and they sold him everything they told him he "needed". I get there and he had the new printers and about $400 worth of stuff that he didn't even need. I asked him why he bought all the extra stuff and he told me that they said he had to have it to make the printers work. I'm sure it's possible he have them some bad info out of ignorance, but it wouldn't have taken much to realize exactly what he really needed.
I charge $50, for the first hour and $25 for each additional. If I can't fix it, it's free. =) Of course I have no overhead. For friends and family I only charge them a six pack of Guinness.
Ironically, CompUSA had some 1GB drives for $15 last week.
Actually, everyone mispronounces the name. It should be pronounced com-poo-sa, and happens to be the name of a city somewhere in China.
IMHO, it's because there's no profit at all in computer hardware. All of the $$ are in services and service contracts.
That's why BBY and others like them push the service contracts so hard. They're neraly 100% profit.
Newegg is great, All products have customer reviews like CNET. Zipzoomfly Doesn't have quite the selection but alot of products are actually cheaper and come with free 3 day shipping. Built my whole computer with top end parts from those 2 sites, Mostly Zipzoomfly if they had what I wanted.
I hated Buying the Small crap I wanted from Newegg like 5 dollar fans then having to pay 5 bucks a pop to ship them, Especially when they coulda packed them in one box.
"I just tell that to everyone in the office when they screw up their computers, and beg me to fix them."
LOL I hear you, brother!
They charge 15% nore, and their staff sucks. they should just close all their stores and cut potential losses.
To be fair, CompUSA isn't the only one to pull the rebate scam with advertised prices - Best Buy is horrible at doing that. That just drives me crazy, because it's usually next to impossible to get the rebate. They keep demanding more and more documentation, or claim they "lost" your original documentation, until they wear you down and you just give up.
I've had one exception to that. Last year, I bought a Pentax DSLR camera that came with a $100 rebate offer - I would have bought the camera anyway, even without the rebate, but I went ahead and sent the receipt and the proof of purchase, frankly expecting the usual routine. Nope - Pentax sent me the rebate check in about four weeks, no questions asked. So I give them a big thumbs up, and would be very happy to give them some future business.
But sadly, that kind of service with a rebate is far and away the exception. It's so bad that if I see a price and then notice that that price is valid only after a rebate, I consider it a deal killer. IMO, it's borderline fraudulent advertising, since the manufacturers and the stores know that most people will never get the rebate.
Yup, i think they do it on the reciept now but I remember the good ole' "Rebate Wall" where you would have to sift through a pile of product rebates for 1o minutes, ask sales person for help, They look for 10 minutes then a half hour later you just say Screw it and walk out in disgust.
