The U.N. Security Council on Thursday condemned all terrorist attacks in Iraq, including the recent chlorine gas bombings, and called for an end to the violence that has killed thousands of civilians.
Council members called for redoubled efforts to bring security and stability to Iraq.
The council acknowledged the efforts of the Iraqi security forces and the U.S.-led multinational force "whose members are also being targeted in ongoing attacks." It expressed hope "that the efforts of the government of Iraq will contribute to bringing security and stability to the country."
Iraq's U.N. Mission sought the council's condemnation of recent terrorist acts which have included the bombing of trucks carrying chlorine gas, which attacks the eyes and lungs within seconds, causing difficulty in breathing and at extreme levels death. Despite stepped up security measures in Baghdad, violence has continued to hit the city of 6 million people as well as cities and towns elsewhere in Iraq.
The United States drafted the press statement which was approved by all 15 members and read by the current council president, Slovakia's U.N. Ambassador Peter Burian.
Council members reiterated their call on all 192 U.N. member states "to prevent the transit of terrorists to and from Iraq, arms for terrorists, and financing that would support terrorists."
The resolution welcomed progress in training and equipping Iraqi security forces and the transfer of security responsibilities to the Iraqis in a few provinces and it looked forward to continued efforts in 2007 and "to the day Iraqi forces assume full responsibility for the maintenance of security and stability in their country."

The U.N. Security Council on Thursday condemned all terrorist attacks in Iraq...
----
Wow. Are all the terrorists running for their lives toward Syria and Iran ???
Since the Dems always listen to their god, the UN, shouldn't this mean we have to stay in Iraq until the terrorists are defeated?
No, since they view W as the biggest terrorist in the world, they're trying to order the US out of Iraq. It is the UN, afterall.
So what? This is about as useful as the House passing a non binding resolution.
Get back to me when the security council decides to put Iran, Syria and Pakistan under threat of annihilation.
Of course, my bad.
Maybe they sense that Iraq is turning around and want to get on board the train before it leaves the station.
A lot of Hot Air, I'd say. Get the perps and kill them then let these wimps express their minds. (Like JOY!)
This is exactly how the liberals think the problem should be solved....talk it to death in the U.N., sing "Kumbaya" and go back to tie-dyeing t-shirts.
