Good point. He just damaged his only 'strength' with the base.

Maybe we should start a letter-writing campaign, begging and pleading that he must resign from the Senate in order for us to support him fully for president, that the Senate is a distraction, that no serious candidate for president will remain there, etc.

Think he'd fall for it? The man is as dumb as rocks.
