I'd say he did have a good hand in defeating communism in the USSR. But we haven't defeated communism.
I would agree with that assessment. But do a quick google for "Reagan" and "communism" and you will find countless stories that use the phrase "Reagan defeated communism."
It's a matter of semantics.
Did we defeat it? Yes.
Did we eradicate it? No, of course not.
