If this is true, shame on Rove. I was raised with the idea that all honest work should be respected. The notion that certain types of jobs are okay for immigrants but beneath the dignity of native-born Americans is elitist and anti-American, IMO.

And promoting that attitude isn't going to do much to help our native-born poor people break the cycle of poverty. Not far from me, there's a housing project occupied mainly by black Americans. Often in the middle of the day, I'll notice dozens of young, able-bodied men 18-24 standing around there doing nothing productive. There are plenty of honest jobs that any of these guys are perfectly capable of doing (e.g., janitorial, restaurant help, gardening, etc.), but they've presumably been told that such jobs are beneath their dignity. Thus, they stand around, shoot baskets, sell dope, etc., while our elites insist that the janitorial, restaurant and gardening jobs should be done by immigrants.

I find that this attitude varies from region to region. I grew up a farmer's son in Nebraska, and just about every one I have met from the Midwest can understand why I treasure that experience. They may have been well off and not have had to work like that, but they understand.

I have met people from other areas who are totally repulsed that some one who had a college education would be proud of working some of the jobs I did.

Not only will Karl Rove's kid not pick tomatoes or make beds, but he also won't ever wear a military uniform. That kind of work is beneath Rove's class and will have to be done by others.

It is such irony that Rove's standard retort to all those who oppose amnesty and open borders is "you hate brown people". Yet with these now verfied comments (Rove concurred on the evening news) it is revealed that Rove himself is the one who considers brown people subhuman.

What is sad here is that this attitude by the elites transcends parties - you see it in Rove, and Pelosi, and Kerry and the pundits. They rule and it is for the rest of you to clean up after them. Compare the attitude of Rove to that of Reagan. Rove's comments reveal that with no change in the Republican ruling class attitudes or people, the party will alienate itself from the American majority of plain folks. Rove and his family won't pick those tomatoes or make those beds or serve in the military, but they are few. The people who do and their families are the many.

2008 will be a disaster. Sad, because the Democrat elites are just as bad.

It's time for a People's Party. Rove need not apply.

IMHO, this has been one of our great failings with the current generation of young people, who think that any sort of work is beneath them. Besides the spiritual bankruptcy of the "gimme" attitude that the parents of these kids have bequeathed to them, there is the practical element. There has arisen a huge crop of young adults who have no understanding of the work ethic and the value of work in human endeavors.

I grew up in a country club republican household, Rove could have just said NOKD and the country club repubs in the audience would have understood.
My mother is still of that mindset, but I would say I am more of a Crunchy Con in the true Russell Kirk mold.
