Most of the schools in the Detroit area are closed.

I grew up here and we NEVER had school closings because of the cold. Two feet of snow - yes, but not when it was zero degrees.

And to boot - we had to walk to school in those days, or wait outside for a bus. Nowdays more than half the kids are chauffeured to school by mommy or daddy.

We are turning into a nation of pantywaists.

I remember my older sisters walking to school in Detroit after we had gotten close to a foot of snow. (at least it seemed that much to me!) They got to school, were told it was closed, walked home, and were told on the radio, that the schools were open! This was years ago, of course, before Detroit had any buses and no one had to walk more than a mile to school.

My weather memory was trying to walk to school with sidewalks that were sheets of ice. I made it all the way to school without falling, over half a mile, only to slip on the front walk of the school.
