Hey, here in South Carolina we close 'em for a heavy frost.
Not to mention raid the grocery stores for milk and every loaf of bread.

-18 air temp right now and -32 windchill. School is open and on schedule.
We're tough in the rural areas. I noticed the Cesar Chavez Academy and Peace Community School are closed in Minneapolis/St. Paul. PC weenies! LOL So predictable.

In the beginning of January, they closed the Louisville, KY and southern Indiana schools because they PREDICTED snow (We never got any).

I don't exactly get their logic. At 6am it is 2 below, by 8am it is still 2 below. What does a delay accomplish exactly? I mean it's always dark at 6 regardless of the temps so...
Just wondering.

I am amazed at how quickly they close schools now a/c weather.
As a boy I trudged thru snow sometimes up to my knees to get to St. Joseph's.

I think in NYS there is actually some law (there's a law for everything here) that says if it's below a certain wind chill/temp the public schools must close. Not sure what that temp is though, seems like 20 but I think it's more closely correlated with the Wind chill since the kids have to stand out waiting for the bus.
When it comes to snow, we need like 2+ ft to get any real closures. This is Western New York after all, we're used to some snow :-)

When it is such that exposed skin freezes schools may close due to cold because of the small children that still have to walk to school.

In Virginia, no. In West Virginia, several counties are on a two hour delay. In Maryland, a few two hour delays.

Most of the schools in the Detroit area are closed.
I grew up here and we NEVER had school closings because of the cold. Two feet of snow - yes, but not when it was zero degrees.
And to boot - we had to walk to school in those days, or wait outside for a bus. Nowdays more than half the kids are chauffeured to school by mommy or daddy.
We are turning into a nation of pantywaists.

I remember my grade school closing in the mountains of western Maryland when it would drop below 0 degrees. It kind of sucked for us because the school building was on a protected side of the mountain, out of the wind, and thus always warmer than our house.

Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?That's a good question. Let me find out for you.
"Honey, a fellow Freeper wants to know if we are closing our school today because of the cold!"
"What's that! I can't here you over the kids. They've got the Abeka DVD program too loud!"
"Oh, O.K."
"She said yes, we are open today. Then she called me an idiot."

Schools up here in the northern panhandle of WV are closed today. Damn global warming!!!
Our schools allow for so many snow days of which we had none so far. I think since it was a weekend many busses probably had freezeups.

Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold? No, but when it is -10°F or colder, they don't let them play outside for recess.

The Memphis, TN schools and all the counties around it closed for two days cause of a little bit of snow powder on the ground.
But don't worry. We'll warm the Earth with our SUVs. It's our duty to keep the kids in school.

My son's school, Churchville Chili HS, Churchville, NY, did not close today. It's brutal here in Rochester today, with free air temps at 6 degrees, with 30mph wind gusts, the wind chill temperature is -20 degrees! Even the Amtrack trains have been cancelled through here (Lakeshore Express) but Churchville Chili HS remains open! Everyone is bussed to school in our district, so there's no walkers; however, they still have to wait for the bus in the cold. We have some hardy kids!
When my kids were little, in the hopes that it would bring on snow day, they'd wear their pajamas inside out, kind of like a rally cap in baseball! LOL :-)
