Spitzer stands by "steamroller" boast

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was unabashed on Wednesday about declaring himself a "steamroller" and the most accomplished governor in the history of the state after three weeks on the job.

"I am a fucking steamroller and I'll roll over you or anybody else," the Democratic governor told Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco in a private conversation last week, the New York Post reported on Wednesday.

"I've done more in three weeks than any governor has done in the history of the state," Spitzer also said, the Post reported. Reuters Pictures Photo

Asked at a news conference if the comments were inappropriately boastful, Spitzer replied tersely, "No. Next question."

Former New York governors include DeWitt Clinton, who built the Erie Canal in the 1820s, connecting New York to the interior of the United States and cementing New York City's position as a powerhouse of international trade.

Four former governors went on to become president including Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose social welfare programs for the state provided a model for the New Deal when he later entered the White House.

"Most of those things take longer. At that rate we should be in heaven in four weeks, but he (Spitzer) might not get in for lack of modesty," said former Gov. Mario Cuomo, who added that he did not consider the matter serious and did not expect it to hurt Spitzer politically.

Let's be honest: If it were a Republican, we'd like his badass attitude.

If nothing else, I find it incredibly amusing.

Please do not print "Republican" and "badass attitude" in the the same sentence. My eyes hurt from rolling so hard. You might want to use "timid", "trembling", or "lamb-like". They would be more accurate.

Let's face it, if he were a Republican the media would be demanding his impeachment.

If you have to tell people you did...you probably didn't.

That said, yeah, the "f**king steamroller" blast is funny.

From wikipedia:

Spitzer used a New York statute to allow his office to prosecute cases which have been described as within federal jurisdiction. In January 2005, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce described Spitzer's approach as "the most egregious and unacceptable form of intimidation we've seen in this country in modern times."

This guy strikes me as a Huey Long-style governor. He might make Hillary look sweet and demure and respectful of the law.

I am going to enjoy this, Elliot Spitzer is a very unpleasant person, he has been a prick since he was a little kid, his family is very wealthy, he has the Kennedy disease, "I am me, therefore I am entitled to rule you."

His meltdown has started, if you think Hillery is trouble wait until the real Elliot steps up.

I'll bet that the trains are going to run on time in NY now also.

He sounds like one of Eric Hoffer's "True Believers".

Spitzer and Bloomberg, what a pair. No smoking, no fats, no booze, no sweets, no dairy, no fun, no free enterprise, no thought crimes, no dissent.

Smells like fascism to me.

"You vill conform to ze Nanny culture or else!" "Ve know what's good for you und you vill obey to have it!" "Or else!"

there is a special election on long island this week for a state senate seat. Spitzer is directly backing the Dem (the seat is/was currently held by a republican). Its a tough district, it has a Dem registration advantage. If the R manages to win it, Spitzer is going to go berserk.

Probably true, but I thought it was pretty funny when Cheney told Lehy to go f$%k himself, and I think this is pretty funny too.
