"Over the next five to 10 years, clearly national security is going to be a major focus for our country," Hunter says after being asked why he is running. "I've concentrated on that function of government for the last 26 years in the House of Representatives."

Just some background info on Hunter and his outspoken nature to go where not many(I don't think any) Republicans go with their spineless nature.

Hunter on Abu Ghraib(courtesyhttp://www.larouchepub.com/other/2004/3128goss_hunter_block.html : )
Probably the single loudest obstructionist voice in the House of Representatives in support of the Cheneyac "Beastman" policy in Iraq has been Armed Services Committee chairman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.). Hunter has been able to use his position to block any meaningful inquiry into the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and at every public opportunity, has railed against those who are demanding such an investigation. He even went after his GOP counterpart in the Senate, John Warner (Va.), for holding three hearings in two weeks on the scandal, practically accusing Warner of treason.

Under great public pressure, Hunter has since held one hearing, for part of one day, and has no intention of having any more. During debate on the Fiscal Year 2005 Defense Authorization bill, on May 19, Hunter declared, "We have had enormous publicity the last number of days about the mess at Abu Ghraib. I estimated we have probably devoted as much media attention to that mess involving now, as identified, some seven personnel, as we did to the Normandy invasion. And that is an imbalance. It is time to refocus." What did he want to refocus on? "The 135,000 great personnel doing their job in Iraq."

On June 14, when the committee took up a resolution of inquiry sponsored by some 40 Democrats, demanding the Pentagon be more forthcoming with documents relating to the prison scandal, Hunter placed the 6,000 pages of the report on the abuse and torture of prisoners filed by U.S. Army General Anthony Taguba (the Taguba Report) on a table at the head of the hearing room and railed at the Democrats, "Isn't that enough for you?"

California Republican Duncan Hunter held a press conference to discuss the treatment of detainees at the island jail, and spent his opening statement going over a daily menu for prisoners that included oven-fried chicken and fresh fruit.

"This is what Osama bin Laden's bodyguards will eat several times a week. Lemon chicken, rice, broccoli, carrots, bread and two types of fruit," Hunter said, inviting a reporter to come eat with him.

Hunter was digging himself out of small hole he got into over the weekend when he said on a news program that the White House is divided over whether to close the jail.

"I think they've come to the conclusion, some members of the White House have come to the conclusion that the legend now, that the legend is different than the fact, and when that's the case you go with the legend that somehow Guantanamo has been a place of abuse and you close it down and you shorten the stories, you shorten the heated debate and you get it off the table and you move on," he said.

Rep. Hunter ought to run for a state office before he runs for president. He needs the executive experience.
Obviously since he is from California he might as well forget that from happening and move to a southern state. He has no chance of winning the presidency.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., shakes hands during a campaign stop with workers at a military equipment manufacturer in Newington, N.H. on Jan. 29.

They screwed up his bio-they have him dropping out of HS to be a Marine. He dropped out of college, went in the Army, and was a Ranger in Vietnam.

I think what could ratchet up Hunter a few notches is if with his support on the war in Iraq he could say something to the effect that while he supports the war, he would prosecute it differently and fight harder to win quickly and get our boys home. Stating simply that he supports the President on the war alludes that he supports the status quo which most people don't. Say you support the war, but you want our boys to kick some Muslim butt and get the heck home, not dilly-dally around in the desert for 5 years.

See his quotes on post 5. He thought the White House caved into pressure in saying Guantanamo was a problem. I'm sure Hunter, himself a Vietnam vet, would like to see Iraq run in an un-PC way. We'll see as the campaign unfolds.

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=14568 Why COSCO wants Long Beach -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: September 3, 1998 1:00 a.m. Eastern

The Chinese Overseas Shipping Co. is pushing harder than ever to secure a port facility at the former U.S. Naval Base in Long Beach, Calif.

"Most major carriers have their own terminals in the U.S., and it is logical for COSCO, as a major carrier, to want to have their own terminal," explained Jiufeng Dong, the president of COSCO's North American subsidiary in a rare interview with the Journal of Commerce last week. "The site in Long Beach, with the proper layout plans, would satisfy our needs."

Despite the fact that other ports have been offered, the wholly owned subsidiary of the People's Liberation Army seems determined that Long Beach is its best strategic location. And I believe the reason extends well beyond the better layout plans.

Let's put aside, for a minute, all the strings that were pulled from the White House to put this project on the table in the first place. And let's examine the potential for a Long Beach base from the Chinese perspective.

COSCO has a long history of being used by its Chinese military masters for spying and spreading chaos through smuggling of arms and drugs.

"China's intelligence operatives are not stationed in embassies," explains Cmdr. Chip Beck, U.S. Naval Reserves (ret.) and a former CIA station chief. "They work out of banks, shipping companies and businesses."

Several members of Congress have also confided that the Chinese use their industrial facilities and assets around the world as spy bases. Those suspicions are not limited to conservative Republicans, either. Even California Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer have enough political sense to have urged a full national security review of the COSCO Long Beach deal.

But, the question remains, why Long Beach? Why are the Chinese sold on that particular site? What is it beyond a suitable layout that makes the location so appealing?

Long Beach has many advantages. Strategically, it is within earshot and sightseeing distance of all important commercial ports in California. It is relatively close to America's computer belt in the Silicon Valley. But more importantly, it is near the Pacific Missile Test Center, the U.S. Naval Weapons Station, Camp Pendleton and the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, the Fleet Anti-Sub Warfare School, Sub Flotilla 5, the Naval Command Station and the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

And, of course, as I've mentioned many times before, there's the Sea Launch facility a veritable stone's throw away in the same city. That's the project, now under investigation by the Justice Department, for possible security breaches. Sea Launch, which plans to blast satellites into space from equatorial ocean platforms, is a partnership of the Boeing Corp. and three foreign entities including one dominated by Russian intelligence. Moscow and Beijing have a formal agreement to share intelligence information, especially when it pertains to their "common adversary," the United States of America.

Do you get the picture? Could it be any more obvious? Why, then, is the U.S. government still considering COSCO as a suitable tenant for such a sensitive port facility? It would seem like a no-brainer.

Ah, but then we have a man in the White House who doesn't believe the Chinese pose a strategic threat to the United States. He is a man who approved commercial projects with Beijing that permitted the Chinese to improve their nuclear missile targeting on U.S. cities. He is a man whose largest campaign contributors in 1992 and 1996 have strong economic and/or espionage relationships with China.

And we have a Congress that is obviously afraid of the power that man wields.

One of the brighter consequences of the abuse of power allegations currently swirling around the White House is that that they open up the possibility of derailing some truly evil and dangerous plans like the COSCO deal. This was once considered a done deal. But court challenges have stalled the administration's best efforts to steamroll through its agenda.

Now, more than ever, is the time for mounting opposition pressure, lest America's future security be jeopardized because of a preoccupation on less serious matters.

"China is arming, and they're doing it with American trade dollars," he says."

Any problem here?

We need someone who will address this issue. not ignore it. When The conservative core finds out about his stand on the issues his star will rise.

I disagree with Hunter about trade. That said, if he wins the nomination, I would wholeheartedly support his candidacy and want him to crush the Democrat.

Not everyone shares this attitude if someone other than Hunter wins.

I think you are correct and this is a way for him to distinguish himself from the stay-the-course candidates and cut-and-run candidates. I believe that most Americans that oppose the war are opposing it not because they are peaceniks, but because they don't want to see us caught up in a long, drawn-out operation which this has become.

Since neither of the leading DEM candidates have executive experience, it is, at a minimum, a level playing field.

OTOH, Hunter has several decades of experience with the Federal government, while the leading DEM candidates COMBINED, don't have half of that.
