Boston cops make arrest in devices ploy (media terrorist)

BOSTON - More than 10 blinking electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city Wednesday in what turned out to be a publicity campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. Most if not all of the devices depict a character giving the finger.

Boston police said Wednesday night that one person had been arrested, and authorities scheduled a news conference to provide details.

Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless.

"It's a hoax — and it's not funny," said Gov. Deval Patrick, who said he'll speak to the state's attorney general "about what recourse we may have."

Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc. and parent of Cartoon Network, said the devices were part of a promotion for the TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," a surreal series about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball.

"The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger," Turner said in a statement, issued a few hours after reports of the first devices came in.

It said the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston; New York; Los Angeles; Chicago; Atlanta; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Austin, Texas; San Francisco; and Philadelphia.

"We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger," the company said. As soon as the company realized the problem, it said, law enforcement officials were told of their locations in all 10 cities.

The marketing firm that put them up has been ordered to remove them immediately, said Phil Kent, Turner chairman.

Ted Turner, June 18, 2002:
"So who are the terrorists?
I would make a case that both sides are involved in terrorism.

Gee, every seen a package dangling from an overpass that you were sitting under while stuck in the morning commute?

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1776926/posts

These were wrapped. It didn't look like some toy and people were very upset by the whole thing. I'd like to see every one of these sick, sick b@stards go to prison for terrorism. The prison in Egypt.

Let me state this again ~ we are constantly reminded that boxes/packages/whatevers with batteries and wires just casually left behind on the sidewalk could be dangerous and should be reported.

Boston hosted one of the airports where the 9/11 terrorists departed. Not surprised someone there called authorities about these devices.

While others went blissfully on their way.

A cylindrical package, wires, a battery, and a depiction of a then-unknown symbol giving the finger...and it is attached to various public structures.

The cylindrical package is the batteries -- a set of D cells. I would think police in general and certainly bomb squad experts should be able to figure out that this was an LED display sign by looking at it. Obviously it is rather tasteless, perhaps that lead them off into a panic. If it just said "Open" like the typical LED store sign I doubt they would have treated it the same way.

"a package"

It was a lite brite with a cartoon character flipping the bird.

If I get one of these and put it in the front yard, should I expect a visit from the local police or ATF?

Let me state this again. Only a simpleton that couldn't tie his own shoes and drools could see this as anything other than an advertisement. Quit looking under your bed for boogeymen. It apparently was working in 9 other cities.

I couldn't get into Metalocalypse at first, but now I love it. It makes sense, though. The same genius, Brendon Small, who was behind the wonderful Home Movies, is behind Metalocalypse.

Mission Hill, ATHF, SeaLab and Harvey Birdman are some of my favorites.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Don't show that!!! The very picture frightens me to the point I need to go hide under the bed. I may not sleep at all tonight... ;)

It's a damn oversized Lite Brite!!

I think you need to report - posting that picture is like making a terrorist threat!

Exactly what would you think a terrorist device would look like?

During the Russo-Afghan war the Russians supposedly dropped small contact bomblets made to look like toys.

They were designed to appeal to children.

Supposedly we dropped bright yellow "cluster bombs" ~ and children took the bomblets to be toys.

I think you are doing a disservice by telling people that they are stupid for failing to identify a strange device with batteries and loose wires hanging on it, along with an LED display, as a possibly dangerous item.

So we should panic at any item anywhere that we can't identify as not a bomb?

Maybe we need a government mandated program to inspect everything first to make sure it's not a bomb. Then it could receive an official "not a bomb" sticker to make everyone feel safe.

Of course, terrorists could just counterfeit those stickers and put them on real bombs, giving people a false sense of security before they attack.

I guess we're screwed either way.

Look, if someone thinks something might be a bomb, it's time to call in an expert.

Ted Turner, if he even knew about this advertising promotion, probably didn't care if bombs were used or not ~ but he's creazy isn't he!

These things were wrapped up in packages. One under an overpass, two on bridges, one in the basement of a university building.

I'm guessing that you live in Cowpie County and don't give a rip about Boston MA. How about some of these funny jokers come out to your land and leave some packages near your house or leave some on the road that your kids' school bus travels on? Real funny, huh? What a hoot.
One of my friends has been crying all day. She went right under that overpass to take her kids to school. Ages 7,4,2.
That's a sidesplitter.

p.s. Next time just read the link. The omnipotent thing doesn't seem to work for you.

Wait you mean......oh no, the Russkies are behind the terrorists!!! My stars!! I think we need to immediately require Congress to pass a law to ban any toy that is reminiscent of toy like items Russians used in Afghanistan to be on the safe side

I think you are doing a disservice by telling people that they are stupid for failing to identify a strange device with batteries and loose wires hanging on it, along with an LED display, as a possibly dangerous item.

Awwwwwwww, truth hurts. If you're stupid enough to see a Lite Brite and mistake it for a terrorist threat that's not my fault or the fault of any sensible person....hey wait a minute.....there's a fire alarm in my building at work that has two loose wires hanging out of it. Now that I think about it I've seen wires hanging out of other items out in public (exit signs, red light cameras at intersections, etc.). Oh my God, there's these flashing LED light things at the corners of major intersections in cities. They have a little white person that flashes and then one with a red hand that flashes. Terrorist threat!!! Terrorist threat!!! First thing in the morning I'll report them all!! I'll be a hero!!
