Jim Nussle on Giuliani

Nussle on Giuliani   [Rich Lowry]

Here’s a pro-Giuliani bit from Jim Nussle that I pass along for what it’s worth:

Dear Rich, I wanted to share with conservatives why I'm supporting Mayor Giuliani.  As a proud and consistent conservative Republican, I want our Party and our ideas to have a voice.  Even more importantly, I want our Party and our ideas to achieve meaningful results.

“Perfect” has become the enemy of the “good”, and we saw that borne out during this past November’s elections. I am hopeful that our Party will avoid needless debates over a non-existent perfect candidate.

It is true that Mayor Giuliani and I don’t agree on every issue. My support for a person who doesn’t see eye to eye with me on all issues doesn’t mean that I am turning my back on those beliefs. But our country is at a crossroads and we cannot forsake progress for perfection.

I have chosen to support Mayor Giuliani because I believe we need to embrace the ideals and the values that unite us.  It is the only way we can successfully move forward as both a Party and a country.

Rudy Giuliani is the results Republican our country needs. Mayor Giuliani took office facing difficult challenges. New York City was littered with crime, corruption and decay. The city’s murder rate was so high that an uncommon day was one with only a few murders.

The Mayor led a team that reduced crime and reformed welfare.  He cut taxes 23 times while actually reducing the size of the City bureaucracy.  The Mayor transformed a historic deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus with a balanced budget.  New York City became a safe place for families and small businesses to invest in their future. In Rudy Giuliani, New Yorkers had a leader. One they could believe in.

All of this he did before the tragedy of September 11, 2001. That day the rest of the world witnessed Mayor Giuliani’s steady and principled leadership firsthand.

Today, America needs to make progress in so many difficult areas, and on so many fronts that while addressing challenges with philosophical absolutes makes for good rhetoric, it oftentimes achieves little by way of results.

After over 20 years in public service, I am still confident that free enterprise, living the American Dream and putting the protection of our nation first are the right ideals for the direction of this country.

Rudy Giuliani has consistently governed under these ideals, turning rhetoric into results, which is why I am confident President Rudy Giuliani will be best for our country come November 2008.

I think it would be dangerous for us to overlook Richardson. Lots of primary voters will "never" vote for Hillary. Lots of primary voters will never vote for an inexperienced black man. Richardson has the experience and speaks well. He is a white guy with Hispanic roots who has had a lot of face time on all of the news channels. He is one of the few governors in the race and seems the most normal of the DNC candidates.

Some folks would like the Dems to have one of their most liberal folks win the nomination for contrast. I believe that someone like Richardson could force our nominee to campaign more to the right, again so they can show differentiation. That would make it a lot less likely for a McCain, Guilaini or Romney to win the GOP nomination.

The bottom line is one of the two major parties' nominees is going to win the Presidency. If the worst case happens and it's the Democrat, the more conservative he/she is - the better for the country.

Nah, let's keep the clock in POST 9/11 real time.

Is that why Rudy pushed a business associate for the most important anti-terror job in the country without vetting him in the least bit?

Seems like Rudy needs to adapt a bit stronger post-9-11 mindset as well.

Agreed. The candidates keep moving to the left. This is bad for the country regardless of who wins.

I'm all for that. And while where at it, let our efforts go towards electing a conservative.

Many of us conservatives plan not to vote for Rino Rudy.

You are so right - that National Geographic special, the one with the twins, was just incredible.

If that does not change minds - I don't know what will.

Beautiful.

You are kidding yourself if you think this liberal can win. He will split the party.

I find many of the conclusions the author draws in the article you posted dubious and I'm sure you're as tired of rehashing this stuff as I am, but the author has given me an idea.

The author of the piece compares Giuliani to Newt Gingrich and refers to him as a "Newt Republican". Why go for an imitation when you can have the real thing? Let's get on board the Newt bandwagon and we can elect a visionary conservative who should appeal to conservatives across the board.

Oh he'll win alright - but the party won't be split like Free Republic is.

The level of resitance he is getting here is a foretaste of what is to come. He is a rino and a lib, we can and need better.

Well Newt says he will decide in September if he will run - at least that is what he says. I think he won't run and is just teasing the MSM to keep them on their toes. I think he'll be heavily involved in the Republican nominee's campaign though.

No, it just means that those issues never meant much to you to begin with.

I think I'll try to find the text of his magnificent speech he gave at the convention endorsing President Bush.

Mayor Rudy was a resounding hit with voters.

It is yet another example of a Rudy-ophile just accepting as truth the premise that all Republicans who oppose Rudy seek nothing less than a PERFECT candidate.

Well said! It is condescending, and I have grown weary of the lectures of pro-Guiliani Republicans already, and I must endure at least another year of it.

Well that's because you seem to believe that Free Republic represents the entire Republican and conservative voting block. It doesn't as we can see from the polls. We tend to live in our own little political world here - not the real one where 90% of Americans don't care about politics at all.
