Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has joined the Chandler family in their bid to buy the Tribune Co. media empire, with an eye on the company's Newsday newspaper.
Murdoch's primary interest in trying to strike a Tribune deal is not to own Newsday outright, but to combine that tabloid's business operations with that of the New York Post, which News Corp. owns, according to another source familiar with News Corp.'s plans.
Murdoch's entry into the fray may generate more excitement for an otherwise lackluster auction for the troubled company that concluded last week The Tribune's board is mulling at least three bids for its 11 newspapers, 25 broadcast stations and the Chicago Cubs.
The Tribune's board has been unimpressed with the Chandlers' prior offer, which would spin off Tribune's broadcast stations into a separate company and take the newspapers private, according to a source familiar with the situation who asked for anonymity because the process is ongoing.
Even though the Post is gaining readers, it continues to lose money because of a lack of advertising, and a joint operation might trim the Post's losses, the source said.
The New York Post is one of the few newspapers growing in circulation. In the most recent newspaper circulation audit ending in September of last year, the Post's circulation increased 5 percent over 2005 to 704,011. Newsday's circulation was off 5 percent in the same period, to 411,000.

I would think that if this does happen, that 90% plus would quit the LA Times/Chicago Tribune.
Gosh I hope this happens just for the Chicago Trib, its more conservative than the Sun Times but still pretty left, will Fox own the Cubs then too?
So what. Rupert's a closet Lib' in bed with Hillzilla anyway. Actually he'll fit in the culture real well.
Actually Rupert said several months back, he WOULD NOT endorse Hillary for president. Doesn't sound like he is in bed with her to me.
Kick some behinny Rupert! can't imagine the heart attacks around the newsrooms if this happens.......!
Go Bears!!!!
Starting with their ultra liberal Washington reporter Darryl McMannus.
In a personal email to the editor of my local rag prior to the elections, I used a NY Post article as a reference. The editor wrote me back and said he didn't consider anyone who writes for the Post a real journalist. My local paper has taken a real left turn in the past few years, but there's no competition. If I want local news, ads and obits, it's my only choice.
Is that a reference to the choice posed to him by Charlie Rose forcing him to choose between her and McCain?
I stand by my words. Here is a good history: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/061016fa_fact1
I think many confuse Rupert with Roger Ailes.
From your mouth the Gods ear
Lib Chris Mathews was dissing a Philadelphia paper on his show a few years back and stated "about the only paper more left wing would be the Baltimore Sun".
How great would it be to see this rag have some fair and balanced reporting...
Murdoch is a Hillary supporter and needs to be defeated.
The guy is a snake. IMO
I think its going to be a really good hard fought game
The only way I will ever read that rag is if this happens
this is a very old article you are posting to....
as you may know Newsday was eventually bought by Cablevision and the Dolan family, who seem to be happy keeping its Leftist orientation.
