16 Iraqi militia leaders detained, US says (Sadrites)

US military officials in Iraq say 16 militia leaders loyal to the Shia cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, have been detained in operations by American and Iraqi forces.

The militia has been blamed by Sunni leaders for many sectarian killings around Baghdad.

The Americans say 600 members of Mr al-Sadr's militia, the Mehdi Army, are now in detention.

The US military says there have been more than 50 joint American and Iraqi operations aimed at the Mehdi army militia in the past six weeks.

One senior militia commander had been killed in a raid.

Just how significant are the 16 senior figures now in custody is still not clear.

But this appears to be the beginnings of a harder line on this Shia militia.

In the past, the Iraqi government has been criticised for turning a blind eye to its activities for political reasons.

But, but, but, the democrats say new policy is same old same old stuff. How can this be? Is it possible that they didn't hear all the changes that have come about or that maybe it WASN"T AMERICA TO BLAME that we haven't done better? Maybe Maliki's change of heart and willingness to go after his own bad people has actually helped America to help Iraq! Maybe all but 4 provinces IN Iraq ARE SUCCESSFUL and that our media is so complicit that they CANNOT PRINT THE TRUTH about the SUCCESS OF THE IRAQ WAR!

Al Sadr still has not been prosecuted for the murder he was responsible for 4 years ago when we first invaded.

If I recall our troops were engaged in hot pursuit of Sadr and were stopped short of his Mosque where the fighters and murders were holed up. I knew right then that mookie would continue to be a problem if not dealt with. And I was right.
And we actually pay government officials to make bad decisions, while citizens can see clearly exactly what we are doing wrong. But we are ignored.

I guess we rather pay idiots to make decisions when there is plenty of consensus free advice.

The calculation was made by Allawi (one tough SOB) that having a shia uprising in Sadr City was more than his nascent gov't could cope with at the time. Nevertheless, we cleaned out hundreds of Mahdis from Najaf.

Again, we kick butt, and the MSM in the U.S. ignores the truth and continues to paint a false picture of what's going on there. We have to get reliable info from the Aussies.
