Bush set for climate change U-turn

Downing Street says that belated US recognition of global warming could lead to a post-Kyoto agreement on curbing emissions

The Observer (UK)

George Bush is preparing to make a historic shift in his position on global warming when he makes his State of the Union speech later this month, say senior Downing Street officials. Tony Blair hopes that the new stance by the United States will lead to a breakthrough in international talks on climate change and that the outlines of a successor treaty to the Kyoto agreement, the deal to curb emissions of greenhouse gases which expires in 2012, could now be thrashed out at the G8 summit in June.

The timetable may explain why Blair is so keen to remain in office until after the summit, with a deal on protecting the planet offering an appealing legacy with which to bow out of Number 10. Bush and Blair held private talks on climate change before Christmas, and there is a feeling that the US President will now agree a cap on emissions in the US, meaning that, for the first time, American industry and consumers would be expected to start conserving energy and curbing pollution.

'We could now be seeing the beginning of a consensus on a post-Kyoto framework,' said a source close to the prime minister. 'President Bush is beginning to talk about more radical measures.'

The move will be seen as part of a wider repositioning of the Bush government after its comprehensive defeat in last autumn's mid-term elections.

A change of heart on the environment was signalled earlier this month when the US administration unexpectedly announced that polar bears were now an endangered species because their habitat

I'm not sure "gullible" is the word for those who dismissed Republican control as being no different than Democrats before the last election. And I'm not sure it's the word for those who likely didn't even read this article.

Blair was also told in meetings with senior senators late last year that they would seek to push through measures on global warming which had been repeatedly blocked by the Republicans before the midterm elections...

But another source close to the negotiations warned that Bush had previously appeared to give ground on climate change, only to fail to make real concessions. The best hope could lie with a post-Kyoto deal for 2009, the source said - by which time Bush will be out of office.

I'll wait to hear the exact words, if you don't mind.

But you go right ahead and go crazy about something you know nothing about.

With Bush's first attempts at SC appoinments, the Mexican SS sellout, the added SS benefits for prescription plan in the billions of dollars, his lack of concern about illigal aliens, other issues, and now this.

I think and rightfully so that maybe Bush is a RINO or even worse.

He is starting to appear as a Socialist to me!

So you're gonna blame Bush because you're gullible? Whatever works for you, I guess.

Bush appears so shell shocked that he is becoming a blubbering idiot if he keeps falling further and further to the left. He is becoming a total bust as a president. Except for the war on terror, he is starting to really piss me off. What next, approve koto-moto treaty??

Since the source appears to be Tony Blair leaking to Gaby Hinsliff - Juliette Jowit - Paul Harris, who I presume are three Guardian Communists, I too think I'll wait and see.

No question the pressure is on to give in to this global warming/greenhouse gasses nonsense. Let us hope it's not true.

One thing is predictable. IF Bush comes out in favor of some nitwitted plan, he will get absolutely zero credit from the whackoenvironmentalists who hate him. So, what's the point?

Give me the true definition of a Socialist, and when you're through, point out on the factual record where this President has sold us out to Socialism.

I you can't, (And I already have the answer to that) you will simply fall into the KNEE-JERK category.(Heavy on the JERK.)

No, I'm gonna blame him for doing things like this...

Social Security billions could go to Mexicans

...that make me give the other stuff a second look.

Whatever works for you, I guess.

Trust but verify, baby. You bet.

Considering his record on selling out on other issues, this one isn't that hard to believe.

Of course some koolaid drinkers still think he's the greatest president ever.

Your lack of respect and faith has reduced itself to claiming the President has become so incompetent, he is now slurring his speech. You make me laugh!

If you are going to respond to me do so without posting that I said something that I did not. I never used the term "slurring his speech". No did I ever say he was "incompetent". You can read words, try to comprehend them.

By the way, I supported George W. Bush here in Texas for govenor way before most people who knew who he was. I've strongly supported him for many years. If he could ever explain why the WOT is so important while at the same time he allows the borders to be wide open I might be more supportive.

Hasta La Vista, Social Security

The story's legit. Don't shoot the messenger.

There's another thread around here. With over 600 replies and even more info. I'll see if I can scare it up. Considering the stink it's still generating, I don't know how you could've missed the story.

You're showing your prejudice; you know very well that many other countries are involved in that, as we are with other countries.

I suspect it's true since the Guardian probably has a good pipeline into 10 Downing St.

The Guardian is generally in sympathy with the liberal to left-wing ends of the political spectrum. This is reflected in the paper's readership: a MORI Poll taken between April-June 2000 showed that 80% of Guardian readers were Labour Party voters.

I think this may be wishful thinking on the part of the British Left.

WRONG!

The kool-aide drinkers are making knee-jerk claims out of non information. No such plan exists. It is coming from a suspect source and lacks total credibility. This fact still, does not deter those looking for something to stir up misinformation about. It's downright dishonest of you as well as character assassination without just cause.

As far as his record of selling out on 'other' issues, he is one of the few Presidents in our history who has stuck to his plan/plans in spite of popular sentiment.

You people are every bit as bad as the worst of the Democrats when it comes to demagoguery and disinformation.
