CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A man beset by problems since winning a record lottery jackpot says he can't pay a settlement to a casino worker because thieves cleaned out his bank accounts.

Powerball winner Jack Whittaker gave that explanation in a note last fall to a lawyer for Kitti French, who accused him of assaulting her at the Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center, a slots-only casino near Charleston, according to a motion French's lawyer filed this week demanding payment of the confidential settlement.

A couple of things stand out:

1. I can burn through $113 million dollars in 2 years.

2. It's not my fault.

"A man beset by problems since winning a record lottery jackpot says..."

Usually, it is the other way around.

If I recall correctly, he..

..gave a goodly sum to his church

..was an extravagant tipper at booby bars

..acted like a boob at titty bars (leaving 500,000 in a briefcase in the SUV)

This knucklehead put 113-million-dollars in a bank? Where FDIC coverage is only 100-grand per account?

Perhaps he owned T-Bills or T-Notes?

Poor devil.

This is the guy that had $50,000 cash on the front seat of his brand new surburban that was stolen while he was in a strip club.

He put his millions into bank accounts and not into investments?

Something definitely stinks about his story...

He's not that smart.

I only wish I'd been able to find him and pitch an idea or two.

A fool and his money will soon part. The key is to be in the area when said event occurs.

Agreed. I try to defend my state from time to time against unfair criticism, but the fact that we lead the nation in scratch tickets sold each year is something to be "proud" of like electing Kerry and Kennedy.
