ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.
Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.
"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

An explosion ripped through the US embassy compound in central Athens on Friday, a police source said.
Police cordoned off all roads around the embassy.
Police officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.
There was no immediate word on whether there were any casualties.

CNNi had a live shot of Greek television....but said they didnt have details yet...will monitor further.
Athens is a funny place. It could be some different kind of terrorist, but I wouldn't bet on it.
It could have been the gas heater, too, for all we know at this point.
Are the police not allowed inside the embassy? Is that why they don't know the extent of the damage?
Gotta be but the Greeks ain't too crazy about the US either. Remember they even had a big protest when Clinton went there.
