BOISE STATE -- 2007 FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION NATIONAL CHAMPIONS !!
9 January 2007 | self

Posted on 01/09/2007 5:46:20 AM PST by PetroniDE

Time to make everyone in SEC country mad at me.

Boise St. 2007 Football Bowl Subdivision National Champions.

Here is some logic for you.

Florida lost to Auburn
Auburn lost to Arkansas
Arkansas lost to USC
USC lost to Oregon State
Oregon State lost to Boise State

Who did Boise State lose to this season? NOBODY !!

Save the argument about strength of schedule and "didn't play nobody". How many SEC teams play non-conference road games? Think any SEC teams would play Boise State (or any other non-BCS team) home and home?

If Florida had been denied by the BCS this year (which they very nearly were) then the SEC might have blown the whole thing up considering how Auburn was passed over a few years ago.

so in theory boise state would have gone undefeated in the sec this year.

I knew this would get people going.

Probably not, but no-one else did this year either, and you never know. Hey, this theory works as well has having coaches and sportswriters pick the national champion.

Yep, I agree with you. I too am a loyal "Boomer Sooner" fan but Boise did it like no one else did. They are the real champs in my opinion.

I went to UGA so am definitely not a Florida fan. But what some people don't understand is the SEC is an absolute beast. I don't think Boise State would have gone undefeated playing Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU, Auburn. To top it off, Florida absolutely crushed the "best" team in the country, while Boise State miraculously pulled out a W against an overrated Oklahoma team. Great season by Boise State, they really won my admiration.

There's no need to get mad; folks here always treat the retarded with compassion.

SEC teams have scheduled home and aways with teams from other conferences. In recent years, Arkansas has played Texas and Southern Cal. We also played Boise St. several years ago, though I don't remember if we played them at their house. I can't remember who, but someone else in the SEC had a biggie this year too.

What this proves is that we need a playoff system. Boise St. didn't have to go through the week after week gauntlet that teams in a major conference go through (which is why the Gators deserve the championship with our current setup). So, there's no way to know if they could do it over and over. Plus, we'll never know if they could or couldn't have beaten UF because they were never given the chance.

We need a playoff. That's the only honest way the little guy will ever have a fair chance without giving their teams something they didn't earn.

A third-rung team (BS U) beating a second-rung team (OU) is no achievement. The last time BS U played a real university (an SEC team, i.e.), they lost by a zillion points.

Not true. The University of Georgia was the most profitable athletic program in the country last year, eclipsing the money made by most NFL teams. Paying the coaches salary will be a drop in the bucket.

Magellan is right, SEC teams don't play non-conference road games because playing in the SEC is proof enough of strength of schedule.

For Boise State to prove they belong among the elite of college football, they need to join the PAC 10 or Big 12. They have to play a week in and week out schedule against big schools, not the Weber States, Utah States, Montana States, Idaho or Idaho States types. They have to play bigger teams. Boise simply would not make it in the SEC schedule. They would not survive week in and week out against SEC teams. Even strong SEC teams do not do it. Florida mashed the defending national champs. LSU ran over the mighty Notre Dame. I like Boise, but till they move into a larger conference and prove it week in and week out, they are not the national champs. You can rant all you want, they are not.

NCAA Div. 1-A is asymmetrical, that's why a playoff system won't work the way it does for Div II.

I hate Florida (I'm a UGA big time fan), but the SEC is the toughest conference in college football, and in particular, the SEC East is the toughest division..

Boise State would go 7-4, USC would go 8-3, maybe 9-2 IF they played in the SEC..

This system stinks. What is needed is a playoff. Here is my suggestion (in some detail).

1) Start the regular season one/two weeks earlier than now.

2) 12 game regular season plus conference title games as needed. Final weekend of regular season is Thanksgiving weekend.

3) 16 team playoff. Teams selected as follows: Conference champions from top 6 conferences in automatically. Any 1-A (n.k.a. FBS) with 11-1 record or better, provided no more than 1 game against 1-AA also in automatically. Remainder of field at-large (use any method you choose).

4) One week after conference title games, first round of tournament. Seed teams 1-8 in East-West format and tweak seeds so that intra-conference matchups avoided. Use existing minor bowl sites to minimize travel while giving some preference (but not strict home game) to better seed.

5) After 1st round, two weeks off for final exams.

6) Quarterfinals around New Year's Day bowls (don't re-seed teams, similar to basketball).

7) Semi-finals one week later (about this time of year).

8) Final one week later (rotate semi and finals around current BCS bowls).

There you go -- a championship playoff. Under this system, every 1-A teams has a chance to qualify and prove themselves, unlike the b.s. system now.

Doesn't work that way. Arkansas beat Auburn. Auburn beat Florida. Florida beat Arkansas. Life in the SEC baby. THAT's why the Gators deserve what they've got. They had to slug out week after week.

Did you notice they used PAC10 officials for the BCS championship game. The Buckeyes got screwed just like the Sooners. :-)
