The Homeland Security Department is lumping New York City together with parts of New Jersey to assess how much anti-terror cash to send to the area - a stunning shift that lawmakers fear could take an even bigger bite out of the Big Apple's funding.
Under the change, New York is the only major city this year to be saddled by a secondary metropolitan area, one across state lines - Newark and Jersey City in this case.
"We are looking at the New York metropolitan area, which includes northern New Jersey, for the purposes of assessing risk," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told reporters as he unveiled the 45 cities eligible for extra funding.
"The risk for New Yorkers is at this level," Chertoff said, raising his hand. "And to say the risk if you cross the Hudson River is at a much lower level doesn't make a whole lot of sense."
A skeptical Sen. Chuck Schumer, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, warned New York could lose out big-time by carrying the New Jersey cities.
"No matter what it says now, if the department combines two areas, they always end up getting less," Schumer said.
"When they combine two areas, the problem is, each would probably get less funding than they would have gotten had they been separate."
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said linking NYC and the NJ

I would be more willing to pay taxes for this if I thought they were actually going to use it to fight terrorism. Most likely, it will be used to create local jobs that do nothing useful.
Does anyone know if they're "sanctuary cities"?
I can assure you that the level of anti-terror policing is quite extensive and expensive, but it's still not enough. And because NYC will always remain the logical target of foreign terrorists, NYC should get every penney they need BEFORE places like Omaha Nebraska. No offense to Omaha Nebraska, but the terrorists have never heard of it, the used terrorist dollars to buy new fire trucks, and Warrent Buffet is a big fat limosine liberal. Not only is NYC the financial capital of the world, but it has the highest population density, so you get a lot more bang for your buck.
There are parts of New Jersey that are merely suburbs of New York, New Jersey is filled with Chemical plants and tank farms for fuel. A very ripe target.
The attack, when (not if) it comes will be against a target in Manhattan, or a bridge or tunnel connected to it, because that's where the media is, and that's were you are guaranteed of killing the most people.
It would be true, if not for the fact that the NY politicians have complete contempt for the war on terror. I'm sure they will use this money to hire cops, but then they will cut back on their own funding of the cops, and pocket the savings.
Chertoff, Chucky, Hildebeast, New Jersey......
nuff said.
75-80% of the entire Homeland Security funding budget should go to NY/NJ.
They will attack NYC with a nuclear device in 2010 as per their seven steps to Caliphate plan. They have told us (via interviews) that is what they intend. It is absolutely ludicrous we aren't paying attention.
Uranium/rad detectors should be put up everywhere in the area. Underground shelters, hospitals and contingency plans need to be ready before then.
Those figures are hyperbole. Obviously 80% would shaft other needs elsewhere. What is meant is a VERY HIGH portion should be going to NJ/NY area because it is target #1.
Where are you from? I can tell you that, for instance, there are always five or six armed soldiers in Grand Central and Penn Station. There is always an NYPD boat hovering underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. There is always a Coast Guard Cutter under the George Washington Bridge. Ground Zero now has its own dedicated PA police precinct. Every day a Hercules team randomly descends on a target. All of these things cost money, and they are needed at few other places.
I'm from Florida, where the 911 hijackers got their training, and the first anthrax letters arrived.
I'm not suggesting that NY doesn't need terror funding. I am just deeply suspicious that the NY politicians who are more interested in funding entitlements than the war on terror are not really going to use the money for the intended purpose. Maybe if NY had some hawks, I'd have a different view, of course.
Before then suicide bombers will hit either Penn or Grand Central Stations at rush hour. I am in Grand Central twice a day, and I make a point of never passing through the main room if it's not absolutely necessary.
You nailed it. Wasn't it two week after 9-11, while they were still recovering bodies, that the "beautiful people" of Greenwich Village held their first anti-war demonstration just blocks away from where the war was thrust upon us?
NYC has some of the most competitive airfares in the country in one of the richest cities in the country. They could be financing a few of their own security needs with an additional tax on air tickets through NYC, demonstration permits or whatever.
Then we can cancel all those other places. Save that money.
No sense in sending money to places that wont be attacked.
Just send it all to Manhattan.
Peter King is an a-hole, who used to openly support the IRA, but he has become pretty hawkish on terror. Mike Bloomberg is a Democrat pretending to be a Republican, but he, too is strong on terror when he is not worrying about frivilous things like trans-fats. I'm not saying that terrorist funds shouldn't be spent elsewhere, just that most of them should go to NY. There should be a platoon of soldiers in Grand Central every day. Terrorists are adaptable. If you tighen the noose in Florida, they'll move to New Mexico. You can't be everywhere, but you know for a fact that they are eventually coming to NYC.
Hoboken residents can sleep soundly tonight.
Not everybody in NYC is a hippie. The biggest industry in NYC is the financial services industry, which is heavily conservative for obvious reasons. I worked in the WTC in the spring of 2001, and I would venture that 75-80% of the people who died that day voted for Bush.
For obvious reasons we have to spend money elsewhere in the hopes of apprehending them before they attack, but most of it should go to NYC, because that's where it is actually going to happen.
