Troops capture 13 terror suspects

BAGHDAD -- Elements of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, captured 13 suspected insurgents and recovered several weapons as Operation Arrowhead Strike III continued Jan. 3 in a northwestern neighborhood of the Iraqi capital.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment and 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment are all working in northwestern areas of Baghdad to support Operation Arrowhead Strike III.

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division and police officers from the 5th Brigade, 2nd National Police Division are working closely with the coalition forces in this operation.

These combined forces are working to clear and control the Hurriya neighborhood in the Kadamiyah district and surrounding areas of Baghdad in order to disrupt terrorist and militia activity and enable control and retention by coalition and Iraqi security forces.

As a result of 22 raids conducted in the area over the past two days, weapons and other items seized included three AK-47s, two 9mm pistols, five AK-47 magazines, two sniper rifles, two pistols and two suicide vest devices.

The 13 suspected insurgents are in U.S. military custody and the recovered weapons were confiscated by military personnel.

Operation Arrowhead Strike III continues in an effort to neutralize terrorists, protect the Iraqi people with a sustained goal to secure the capital jointly with the Iraqi security forces.
