MUNCIE, Ind. -- An animal shelter in Muncie has been overrun by rescued pit bulls who were likely being groomed for a fight to the death.
A battered dog was found dead in a Dumpster on Wednesday, highlighting a problem that has become more pervasive in Delaware County, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.
Dozens of pit bulls officials said might have been used for fighting were recently seized from a home and put up for adoption. About half of them have already been adopted, but 13 remained on Wednesday evening.
"They were being bred to be sold as either breeding dogs or to be raised at some point to fight themselves," said Bob Patterson, an animal investigator.
Patterson helped rescue more than two-dozen pit bulls from a home when police raided it in a drug sting.
"Basically, there were makeshift homemade kennels that hadn't been cleaned recently. There was a lot of feces laying around," Patterson said. "Out of the kennels, there were two that may have had food in it. Some didn't have water."
Two more pit bulls were found Wednesday on the streets. They had been chained together and were bloody and battered. The dog that was found dead in the Dumpster had numerous bites and gashes on its body. Officials think it had been muzzled and might have been used as a bait dog in a fight.
"Basically, it's defenseless in that manner," Patterson said. "All it can do is sit there and take the bites. It can't bite back. It can't fight back."
Most of the rescued animals will bounce back and land in good homes, but a couple of the more aggressive dogs might have to be put down.
"We can't rule it out. We hope not to. We're doing the best we can to find them homes," Patterson said.
The owners of the pit bulls face charges in connection with the drug raid and for neglecting and, possibly, fighting the dogs.
Pictures of the dogs available for adoption are at the Web site of the rescue group that is handling the adoptions.
They might not want to advertise them in this manner. ;-)
The dog with mange and cancer ought to be put down now, poor thing.
Oh! Say it ain't so! I'll take 'em! My toddlers would love a pet! I can just imagine them all rolling around on the ground, laughing, squealing, pulling the doggie's ears ...
... screaming for help as the jaws lock on their hands.
Some people make me ill. I wonder what kind of person finds it entertaining to watch dogs maul each other? Having broken up a few dog fights in my time I can say I didn't find them entertaining in the least.
susie
Trained for dog-fighting.... Put the beasts down, ASAP.
i'LL HAVE TO REMEMBER TO ADOPT SOME DECAYING TNT ALSO.
I have a shovel. Maybe I can help.
I say put the trainers down too....
and the audience...
There is something extremely wrong in the head of a person who gets off on watching this crap.

Thank you. AMEN. First sensible post to the topic.
These dogs will always be a problem. They have started life in the worst possible way. They will not be good adult dogs.
You are exactly correct. I know in some large cities (Detroit being an example) any dog trained for fighting is put down as a matter of policy. This is not of course the fault of the dogs but adopting them out is begging for trouble of the worst kind.
Never seen a dog fight itself to the death, not sure that there would really be a winner.
Totally agree.
Breaking up a dog fight might not be a good idea. A woman from this area recently had both of her arms amputated after trying to break up a fight between her two pit bulls. The dogs ripped so much flesh from her arms neither of them could be saved.

I can better understand some fat slob watching bad porno movies in his crappy little apartment than I ever could understand why grown adults would want to see dogs fighting to the death.
Sure, just let me put this Steak Sauce on my throat.
Eric I haven't seen you in forever. Don't you live somewhere between Nixa and Branson or am I thinking of Don Ozark?
I once had a coworker talk about how much he loved dog fights (I was in collge and it was a minimum wage job)....the way the guy started breathing and his eyes glazed over....
I avoided him like the plague from that day forward.....He was nuts! I've yet to meet anyone who's involved who isn't just bad.
Please be compassionate and adopt me. Good with kids.
